How to Plan a Summer Wedding

A summer wedding is simply magical. There is something in the air that excites, inspires, and invigorates the body, mind, and soul. Why not tie the knot in this sizzling and sunny season? Here is how to plan a Summer wedding from the ceremony to the wedding favors.

How To Plan A Summer Wedding

Summer Wedding Ideas

One of the perks of a summer wedding is the weather. Host your ceremony or entire reception outdoors. Many couples host a destination wedding, while others utilize city landmarks or even open floor plan (indoor to outdoor) venues. A vineyard is also an ultra-romantic wedding setting for guests and their wine loving guests. Also, adding an element of water will not only have a cooling effect, it will make a splash with your guests as well. Fountains, ponds, and pools make ideal backdrops for summer ceremonies and receptions.

Summer Wedding Colors

You can’t go wrong with yellow for summer weddings. This bright and sunny shade can’t help but make others smile and is oh-so-appropriate for the sultry season of summer. Shades of coral, gold, mint, or blush also work well for summer ceremonies.

Summer Wedding Colors

Summer Wedding Cakes

Bright, light, and airy colors can also be incorproated into the design scheme of your wedding cake. Choose a cake with some whimsical flair that reflects the sights of the season. A daisy adorned design is adorable, and a strawberry shortcake creation screams summer.

Summer Wedding Dresses

Summer wedding dresses should be light weight, flowing, and comfortable. Avoid anything too clingy. Satin tends to show sweat marks and doesn’t always flatter the figure when viewed in direct light. Opt for strapless styles that boast an empire waist, have cut out designs, or have a short hemline (especially for beach weddings). A little sparkle doesn’t hurt either. Say yes to crystal adorned hemlines or sequins sewn through out the body of the gown.

Summer Wedding Flowers

It’s nice to sit back, relax, and smell the flowers during summer months. Which fragrant flowers will you include in your bouquet? Consider carrying pretty peonies, succulents, and roses. Or, opt for something more earthy, unique, but chic. A bouquet filled with artichokes, celosias, agapanthus, and scabiosa pods will wow your guests and be completely unexpected, yet seasonal. But, when in doubt, a lush and light  bundle of roses, peonies, and hydrangeas will do the trick!

Summer Wedding Decorations

Let the party begin! When it comes to summer wedding décor keep it light hearted, romantic, and fun. String white paper lanterns from the tent or tree tops, hang long strands of flower petals and crystals from tree limbs, and even position comfortable cushioned seating around your outdoor venue. Set up “beach chair” place cards and play up warm and welcoming citrus tones. For favors, opt for bright flip flops so guests can dance the night away in comfort, or fans that showcase the summery theme (and temperatures!).

Planning a summer wedding is a great idea. You have so many options when it comes to colors, décor, and flowers. Plus, sunny and bright weather can be looked upon as a symbol of a happy and healthy new life together with the one that you love!

Yellow and White Outdoor Summer Wedding by Kamila Harris Photography

Yellow is a colour which immediately says ‘happy’ and this is exactly how I felt when I laid eyes on this gorgeous Summer wedding by Kamila Harris Photography. Filled to the brim with darling yellow and white details, from the beautiful bouquets to the tall centerpieces to the tempting lemon-covered cocktail table, it’s the kind of soiree which puts a spring in your step. Add to that a vintage inspired bride with a gorgeous birdcage veil, a romantic outdoor tent in an amazing location surrounded by mist, and you have an enchanting atmosphere better than a Hollywood set could hope for.Yellow and White Summer WeddingSummer Wedding OutdoorsSummer Wedding Ceremony Ideas

Bride Lauren Shares  The Details:

Theme

I knew I wanted a warmer weather wedding. I love summer and couldn’t even imagine getting married when it was cold! When I thought about my wedding, the words I used were “classic, simple but elegant, clean lines, and fun.” So to me, white and yellow encompassed all those things. I had originally thought about adding orange, but in the end, the white and yellow kept it the most simple and made the biggest impact.

Ceremony

Our ceremony was at St. Andrew’s Church in Newtown, PA. Unfortunately, my church I grew up in was under construction and wasn’t going to be ready in time. But a lot of my friends went to St. Andrew’s and it’s a beautiful church and was close to me so that’s why we went there.

Flowers

The flowers I chose were callas and lillies for the most part. They were so classic and frankly, looked beautiful in white and yellow. My bridal bouquet was all yellow callas and lillies, plus a few other things, and the bridesmaid bouquets were white and yellow. Our centerpieces were also yellow and white flowers with water and candles.

Bridesmaids

I wanted the look to be classic and a little vintage. The girls dresses (from Priscilla of Boston) had cream lace at the top and yellow chiffon at the bottom with a black silk ribbon added to the waist to match the guys. They wore black satin peep toes to match the ribbons and pearl earrings (no necklaces). The guys wore black tuxes with bow ties and cummerbunds. They also had white callas boutonnieres and my husband had a yellow one.  For gifts, each bridesmaid received a purse they could use on the wedding day (2 girls got yellow, two got white, two got white crochet with flowers, and one got black), as well as a cream fabric ring with mini pearls in the middle which they all wore on the day as well.

Bride’s Style

I wanted to encompass a vintage feel to my look too. I had a bird cage veil and red satin shoes! (I thought about wearing red lipstick but decided it would be too much!). My dress was very simple and classic with a bow on the back to give it a modern touch.

DIY Details

I made our seating chart. I used a huge foam board and covered it in yellow and white patterned fabric which I bought from Mood. I hand wrote everyone’s names on the outside of mini envelopes and wrote their table numbers on the inside. Then, I got pins with yellow balls on them and, after painstakingly measuring the distance between each envelope, pinned them to the board alphabetically. I also did the favors myself. I bought the jars, filled them with yellow candy and glued little flowers on top. I also spray painted my B and G chair monograms. I didn’t have too much DIY – I’m not that creative!

Reception

I knew I wanted to be outside (again, Summer girl!) and under a tent. So the reception took place at the Pearl S. Buck Estate which was beautiful and secluded with really really pretty grounds. It’s a huge almost farmland like property with green grass and big trees. Our tent was super nice too compared to many others. What also grabbed me was the cobblestone patio in the back of the house where our cocktail hour took place. Luckily, it didn’t rain during cocktail hour!  My favorite part of cocktail hour (and most of the guests) was the lemon martini bar. I think it was the only thing people drank for that whole hour!

Decor

After much debate, we decided to decorate the tent using draping on the ceiling and lights. It was so beautiful and elegant and made everything feel more romantic. We used all white linens with square plates (clean lines!) and for a pop color on the tables (besides the flowers), we displayed lemonheads in jars. It definitely added color to the table along with our menus which also had yellow on them. However, I tried not to put too much on the table because I didn’t want to to look busy. We also donated to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and put a note the bottom of our menu cards to let guests know. Oh! I also had square tables and I loved them. This way, I could have 8 people at a table, couldn’t squeeze in any more, and again, clean lines (haha). Lastly, I spray painted a white birdcage (it was a real one), which I bought and asked the florist to put flowers on it – this was my card holder. It was huge! Stand up!

Biggest Challenge

I think was really the whole church thing was my biggest challenge. Not being able to get married in your childhood church was hard for me, and we didn’t make the decision until last minute! Also, our original guest list was about 320 people. So while I didn’t have control over it, we wanted to get it down! We ended up having 230 people.

Highlights

The absolute best part of my wedding was the band. They were amazing. Everyone was literally up dancing at the start of the salads until the very end. There was a noise ordinance where we were, so they had to stop playing at 10pm. Well, people wanted to keep dancing, and a “One More Song” chant came about ha ha. It was just so fun. They played upbeat, fun dance songs the whole time and were just amazing. And of COURSE marrying my best friend! He luckily is very easy going so he didn’t have too much opposition to the things I picked ha ha. I am one of 25 cousins and the first to get  married, so everybody was in a great mood and was just so excited and happy. It was truly one of the best days ever.

Football Fields & Fairy Floss: A Green & Purple Ohio Wedding

The talented Mandy Paige sent us over this unforgettable green and purple Ohio wedding from last summer. From fabulous shoes to stunning green and purple bouquets to fairy floss favours and a football field photo shoot! . . . it is full of modern twists and classic elegance.Wedding Football FieldPurple Green BridesmaidsOhio Wedding CouplePurple Green WeddingFrom the Photographer: Kristen & Jon met while both attending Miami University at Oxford in Ohio, so they are what students and Alumni would call a Miami Merger:) The Wedding took place in Columbus, Ohio and Kristen arranged for some very cool spots for wedding photos prior to the start of their ceremony. It all started with the rooftop first meeting with Kristen & Jon seeing each other for the first time. Then all 20 members of the wedding party got to “live out their dreams” on the Ohio State football field (or the horseshoe) as we had the stadium to ourselves for an hour. Then we headed for a posh spot of downtown called the Arena before heading to the church for the ceremony. Kristen wedding colors were incorporated into every part of her day with alternating Green & Purple bridesmaids dresses, bright flowers, table runners & toppers, and homemade cotton candy as wedding favors. The reception was held at the River Club in Confluence Park with breathtaking city views! This over the top wedding was an affair to remember!

From the Photographer: This is a beautiful summer garden wedding in Knoxville, Tennessee. The couple had various personalized and sentimental elements such as a violinist who walked around the reception and serenaded everyone (instead of having a DJ), the groom’s two sons were the best “men,” and each family member’s chair had a personalized tag for Mom, Mad, Grandma Isabelle, etc. The bride’s father and step-father both walked the bride down the aisle, and the bride’s bouquet was gorgeous!  April and Mike are such a sweet couple, you can tell when they are together that they love each other so much, and they make a great team! April is such a genuinely sweet person, she is a light to everyone and everything around her. She’s always smiling, and when she and Mike are together, you will most likely find them laughing together.

The Garden in the Woods is a stunning venue in the country hills of Albany, Oregon. On the drive in, the guests ride over a lake with stunning cranes welcoming them. The Oregon rain did come, but we dodged it as much as possible and as soon as the unique ceremony was about to begin, the sun shined down and Suzanne and Joe said I do. From hand-fasting to rock throwing, the ceremony was rad. The party went on through the night with fun music, great food and impromptu karaoke. Suzanne’s awesome dress was a custom made piece from the AniA Collection.

Summer Okanagan Wedding by December Photography

You immediately know when a photographer is excited about a wedding it is bound to be something special. Jessika from December Photography was so thrilled when her friends Ash and Melissa asked her to photograph their wedding. This gorgeous Summer affair took place in Kelowna, British Columbia – a beautiful spot in the Okanagan lake area of Canada – where they all grew up together. Naturally, being a hometown girl, Jessika knew all the best spots to capture her beautiful friends and share their magical Summer wedding. With a casual elegant vibe and a dusky colour palette of white, purple and soft grey, the whole party looked amazing against the stunning lakeside landscape and aqua blue backdrops. Thank you Jessica for sharing Ash and Melissa’s beautiful day and for capturing it all so perfectly.Summer Okanagan WeddingReal WeddingsSummer WeddingOkanagan Lakeside Wedding PicturesBlue Grey Casual WeddingSummer British Columbia WeddingSummer Wedding KelownaCasual Wedding KelownaSummer Casual WeddingOkanagan WeddingOkanagan Wedding Lake

From the Bride: Ash and I had a really hard time picking our venue but it was worth all the effort in the end. We went to numerous spots to view their facility and check their prices but unfortunately just did not feel “wowed” until Manteo. We loved Manteo and both knew it would be a perfect place to exchange our vows.  From the landscape to the amenities offered, it was fabulous.  We both wanted a classy but not too hoity toity wedding.  We had decorators and they did a wonderful job spicing up the room for our reception.  Our chosen colours were purple, brown and yellow . . . probably more my chosen colours. We included a candy table, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all ages.  Also my friend was kind enough to drive out my most favourite cupcakes from Calgary, Crave!  We ordered specialized Jones soda for favours and are keeping some to remind us over the years of our day.  We did do the centerpieces ourselves to cut cost as fresh flowers were quite pricey. We got supplies from a few stores in Calgary and just kept them really simple.  Planning everything from afar was really our biggest challenge but amazingly the day was perfect and flawless.  The best thing really was that all our family and friends were there to celebrate with us.  It was the best day.

Thanks Melissa. It’s evident your hard work really paid off. Congratulations to you and Ash on a wonderful wedding.
