Breathtaking DIY Barn Wedding by Rachel Rowland Photography

Every beautiful detail in this breathtaking barn wedding is DIY. Carefully crafted by friends and family, it proves that rustic chic is absolutely achievable all on your own. There are lovingly special touches everywhere you turn including table numbers made from a tree fallen in the bride’s sister and brother & law’s yard and homemade chalkboards created from re-purposed kitchen cabinets. Wine bottles used as centerpieces (gladly donated by many friends) and mason jar wine glasses made by the bride’s Aunt. The DIY went even further than just decorations with hair and make-up styled by the Step-Mother of the Groom, the ceremony officiated by the Bride’s Uncle, and the wedding party and bride walking down the aisle to music performed by brides sister and brother-in-law. Although there was no wedding planner, you would never know, as all their family and friends worked hard setting up the venue and creating the centerpieces the night before, ensuring every detail was perfect. And as you’ll see from the gorgeous pics by Rachel Rowland Photography it was a true success!

From the bride:

Our wedding was a dream that came true. In some magical way, every piece came together to look and feel stunning, as I think happens when you have amazing vendors, loving family and dedicated friends surrounding your day.

Our vision for our wedding was an eclectic mix of all the captivating wedding themes popular right now with an over-arching theme of mid-summer’s night dream. We had some vintage, some rustic and some bohemian vibes. It was impossible for me to stick with just one theme, as I kept seeing things I loved all over the place.

A lot of my inspiration came from other weddings I saw online but also from every day life. In our home, we have mismatched plates, so I knew right away that I wanted to do that for the wedding to give it that homey feel.

The venue was this incredible bed and breakfast that had an alluring, natural space in their back yard that lent itself to feeling like you belonged there, contributing to the ‘at home’ feel. Our table numbers came from important dates in our lives and our tables were filled with the most stunning flowers I’ve ever seen that we had grown at a local farm. We had a ton of vintage vases combined with tree stumps, moss and a variety of candles to give the space that soft, romantic feel. It was awesome. Everyone got to take home a vase as their favor…something that we hope everyone will enjoy and use!

My dress was originally made in the 60’s and had this intricate and delicate lace that had faded to this breathtaking shade of antique cream. I had some alterations done to give it the flutter sleeves and the deep-V back and make it fit my perfect wedding dress vision. My sister-in-law has the prettiest handwriting and wrote out everyone’s name and table number on river rocks while my best friend made us our wood-burned advice box. We were very fortunate to have an entire bridal party of gifted and loving friends and family that made our wedding incredibly special.

The most important part of our wedding was also the most unique. Our ceremony started off with one our very talented friends and groomsmen playing the guitar while the bridal party and bride walked down the aisle. The bride’s best friend wrote and performed the most beautiful and meaningful ceremony while the groom’s aunt (a JOP) was able to step in at the end and marry us while we stood surrounded by all of our loved ones holding hands. We wrote our own personalized vows for one another that are words we now treasure and use against one another (sarcastically!) in every day life. The ceremony was full of depth, passion, love and joy and if I had the option to go back and change anything, I would leave it exactly the same.

My advice to any bride and/or groom reading this would be to make your wedding day meaningful, whatever that means to you and remember to be in the moment…the day goes quick and it’s back to being a dream.

From the photographer: Periwinkle hydrangeas and pink peonies, classic chocolate cake and cowboy boots, this Backyard Garden Wedding was a dream to style and photograph. The inspiration behind this shoot was more of a feeling; something wholesome and honest, fresh and entirely original. With the help of many talented and creative individuals, we were able to bring this nuanced vision into reality. With the exceptional skills of stylist and event planner, Laura Wear and sumptuous floral arrangements by Durocher Florist, an enchanted scene emerged. Everything came together just beautifully. We just love the natural, unfettered look and feel of this whole shoot–it was understated yet elegant with a homespun twist. We’re happy to report that since this styled wedding, Kelly & Adam (our beautiful bride & dapper groom) have since gotten engaged!

How to Plan a Rustic Wedding

There is nothing more romantic than a rustic wedding. The crunch of the leaves, a cool nip in the air, and beautiful bursts of orange, red, and yellow can’t help but make you smile. What a perfect time to share your love and begin your life with your partner! Here is how you can plan an ultimate rustic wedding that you and your guests will totally “fall” for!

Rustic Wedding Ideas

Consider hosting your event in a rustic location like a barn. You can make this setting totally shabby chic, string lights from antiquated beams, and excite your guests’ senses with the smell of hay bales in the loft.

Rustic Wedding Dresses

A lace lined dress will work with a rustic themed wedding and enhances a number of figures. Consider trying on an ivory or cream lace cap sleeved gown that is long, flowing, and fitted to look gorgeous on your big day, fit in with your theme, and look no fuss but fabulous. For some added charm, you may also wish to drape a delicate lace shawl around your décolletage as the evening air takes over.

Rustic Wedding DressesSource

Rustic Bridesmaid Dresses

Have your favorite ladies wear something short and sweet. Look for ruffle detailing, textured embellishments like a knotted or braided halter top, lace, and opt for cowboy boots to add some country charm.

Rustic Wedding Colors

It is essential that you select a color palette that complements your rustic venue décor and ceremony setting. Keep your color palette neutral to adhere to a rustic theme and avoid anything that looks too bold or bright. Hues and variations of champagne, mauve, rust, pine, and taupe tones are perfect and allow nature around you to really be the star of the show.

Rustic Wedding Decorations

The wonderful thing about a rustic wedding is that you can really include hearty, earthy, and natural elements into you big day. Pumpkins, tea lights hanging from fences, an antique cart filled with fall fruit, and even lanterns filled with seasonal flowers and pine cones are perfect ways to play up your theme and are ultra-affordable!

Rustic Wedding Invitations

Your wedding invitations set the tone for your rustic event. Consider selecting an invitation that has a wooden background and is simple but chic. It will be clear to your guests your themed intent.

Rusting Wedding Cakes

Consider serving up your cake on a hearty slab of a tree trunk! You can keep your frosting neutral and add whimsical embellishments like a birch heart façade with your initials carved as the focal point of the dessert and add cascading woodland flowers and leaves around the sides and base.

 Rustic Wedding Bouquets

Nothing says rustic like a bouquet filled with seasonal wild flowers and fiddlehead. You may also consider succulents wrapped in twine, or strands of lavender adhered with burlap and a vintage sparkly pin.

Planning a themed wedding is fun and easy to do. Work in some of these suggestions and tips into your special day in order to create a memorable, rustic celebration.

From the bride & groom: Our wedding day was simply perfect and I could not have asked for a better day!  When I began planning for our special day, I knew that I wanted it to have a vintage feel with an elegant touch. Immediately, my first stop was my Aunt Janice, our decorating extraordinaire.  I gave her my vision, my colors, my random ideas that didn’t make a lot of sense, and told her to run with it… I trusted her 1,000% to make it perfect!

We had a little over a year to prepare, so we began collecting family heirlooms and portraits to add the special touches to our day.  We had old pictures, family bibles, and other special pieces that we wanted incorporated.  Aunt Janice turned my random thoughts and MANY Pinterest snapshots into something wonderful and unforgettable. There were many nights spent making flower arrangements and decorations.  In fact, every flower (including my bouquet, bridesmaids’ bouquets, and all boutonnieres) were handmade by my Aunt Janice and Aunt Sharon!!!  They are some AWESOME ladies!  My family and I bagged all of the favors and birdseed and the delicious deserts as well.

The aim was to create my dream wedding on a budget… and we DEFINITELY accomplished that!  We truly had a great team on our side that kept things running as smoothly as possible!  Of course there were challenges, but we were determined to not let anything stand in our way.  The most memorable part of the day was the First Look! (seeing each other before the wedding) I will forever and always be grateful to J+A for suggesting it to me… despite my wishes to be super traditional!! Experiencing that moment… just the two of us… was priceless! THANKFULLY, I have the pictures to help me remember that moment (and our entire day) for the rest of our lives!

From the photographer: Aleksey and Lilia are a young and very in love couple from Moscow, Russia. Ever since they decided to exchange vows of eternal love, they set their minds on having a wedding in Santorini, Greece. Aleksey and Lilia wanted to have an intimate wedding ceremony at a location with beautiful views in traditional Cycladic style. For that reason, they decided to have the wedding ceremony at Aenaon Villas in Imerovigli. The wedding ceremony took place out of the luxurious Villa Elidami, where the couple was staying. Apart from Aenaon Villas, the photo shoot of the couple also took place at one of the famous black beaches of Santorini and the village of Oia. The decorations and the flower arrangements were rustic and vintage style, creating a stylish outcome against the magnificent Santorini backdrop.

Tuscan Themed Winery Wedding by Natalie Hilliard Photography

It’s not often you get to escape to Tuscany on a Tuesday, but these lovely winery nuptials from Natalie Hilliard Photography is allowing us to do just that. Filled with beautiful rich tones, stunning florals and rustic Italian details, this tuscan themed wedding, held in an elegant tent, has us beaming from ear to ear and humming Ti Amo over and over to ourselves!

Lovely bride Natalie shares with us the details:

1. What was the vision for your Tuscan themed wedding?

I envisioned a Tuscan villa with many simple, natural elements. And eggplant purple, celadon green, wood & iron for our color palette.

2. What was the size & budget of your wedding?

We ended up spending approximately $14,000.00.

3. Your florals were stunning! What flowers and decorations did you choose for your theme?

  • Ceremony Island Arrangements ~ Salmon Gladiolas, Purple Stock, Green Hypericum, Yellow, Solidago, Green Bells of Ireland, Terra Cotta Rose, Hanging Eucalyptus, Italian Ruscus, Sword Fern.
  • Rusty Iron Spheres ceremony aisle arrangements ~ Mini sunflowers, Purple Stock, Purple Sage, Rosemary, Green Hypericum, Terra Cotta Roses.
  •  Wooden Bowl Reception Centerpieces: Herb Foliage, Purple Lisianthus, Mini Sunflowers, Terra Cotta Roses, Green Hypericum, Physicocarpus.
  • We used antique wooden wine crates from Vintage Ambiance  to use for the dessert buffet tiering. Rustic farm tables (from seattle Farm Tables) were used for the head table, and dinner buffet tables (from Vintage Ambiance) for the guest tables. We also had wine barrels with glass tops for occasional cocktail tables.

4. What do you think made your wedding unique?

The venue itself is very unique! The ceremony site is situated around a pond with an island in the middle of it. The guest sits on one side of the pond and the wedding party stands on the island. Its absolutely beautiful and unlikely anything I have seen before! We did multiple different mini desserts rather than having a wedding cake and we also made all of the beer. We loved it and so did everyone else! Also we decided to hire Chopstix Roadshow for our reception entertainment which is a dueling piano show. The entire show is a live request show so the guests are able to choose what they want to hear. The most fun thing of the night was the photo booth with props that our photographer integrated into our reception. We got some absolutely hilarious and memorable pictures!!

5. Rather than a traditional wedding cake you chose mini desserts. Tell us about those?

We chose a 4 inch mini White-Chocolate raspberry cheesecake as the cutting cake. For guests we had a selection of desserts including mini Quadruple Chocolate and mini Lemon White Chocolate cheesecakes, mini Key Lime blackberry pies and mini classic Apple Pies, mini classic Vanilla and mini Spumoni cupcakes, Hazelnut gelato or Rice gelato.

5. Tell us about your Tuscan themed wedding favors?

We used mini terracotta pots filled with herb starts (ie; basil, tarragon, parsley).

6. Describe your Bridal style?

My dress was from Laineemeg Bridal (formerly From the Gown Up) – an off-white Satin fit and flair, with some lace and rhinestone detailing. My shoes were M by Marinelli with Sparkle silver with rhinestone detailing. I wore a birdcage veil with floral and rhinestone embellishments and carried a bridal bouquet filled with Cream Roses, Orange Dahlias, Cream Hypericum, Orange Calla Lily and Green Hanging Amaranthus.

7. The bridal party look very smart. Tell us about their style.

The bridesmaid dresses were from David’s Bridal Satin Dresses in Lapis. The wore Jessica Simpson Black Patent Pumps and their bouquets were filled with Purple callas, Orange Callas, and ornamental grasses. Tyler’s (groom) boutonniere featured a Sword Fern & Mini Purple Calla Lily and his groomsmen wore herb foliage. They wore Banks Charcoal Grey striped suits with white dress shirts from Jos. Tyler wore a white tie, whilst his groomsmen had patterned Lapis ties to match the bridesmaids.

8. Did you include any DIY or personalized details?

I created the monogrammed stickers we used on the candy bags used for our candy buffet. The wooden bowls used for the reception centerpiece were bought from a thrift store, sanded down, and re-stained. I created all of the table name cards (different grape varietal names) and escort cards display. I also designed the save the dates which were laser cut into cork, as well as all of our boxed invitations.

9. What did you find most challenging?

The most challenging part of our wedding planning was working with a caterer who was too busy to deal with me or my questions in a timely manner. I struggled through it and was able to get everything wrapped up, but it was by far my biggest cause of stress. I’m very detailed oriented so I completely enjoyed the planning of everything else right down to picking the different Italian flavor themed cupcakes and other desserts.

10. What were your favourite moments?

Getting ready was very fun… it’s not every day you get to be so pampered! Also, walking down the aisle and looking into the face of my soon-to-be husband is an unforgettable moment. The fact that we were able to share it with so many of our close friends and family made it that much more special!

11. Your advice to Bride’s & Groom’s planning now?

Seek out multiple reviews on your vendors (particularly from outside their website or their given references). Also, I went into planning with the idea that if I hadn’t received some sort of response after a week of contacting a vendor for the first time, I would cross them off my potential list because communication obviously is not very important to them. I broke this rule with my caterer and ended up seriously regretting it!
