Vintage Travel Themed Wedding by Studio Laguna Photography

Katie and Nick live in San Diego, but came back home to Minnesota for their wedding. They chose a vintage travel theme and paired it with a contemporary gray, navy and yellow color palette. All of the design elements were soft with a touch of glam. From the vintage trolley from Renee’s Royal Valet, to the reception in a St Paul train depot, the couple was on theme the entire time… so it only made sense that Studio Laguna Photography took them to a vintage train museum for portraits!

Hawks Cay Resort Wedding by Kimberly Photography

Lauren and her family have been visiting the Hawks Cay Resort in Florida every year since Lauren was little. She always said she wanted to be married here… and her dream came true. With close family and friends, Lauren married her sweetheart Peter of 10 years in a beautiful outdoor ceremony and poolside reception. With a stunning lace gown, soft grey shades and your token splash of bling, it’s as lovely as they come. There’s not much more I can say people, these gorgeous images by Kimberly Photography say it all!

{Cake Inspiration} Ruffled Wedding Cake in Pink & Gray

I would have to say this pretty two tiered concoction with layers and layers of delicate gray, white and pink ombre ruffles literally ‘takes the cake’ as far as I’m concerned. What girl wouldn’t be smitten with this amazing ruffled wedding cake? It’s so pretty.. and whimsical… and ethereal, you want to wrap yourself in it from head to toe!  This will have to be filed under one of my favorites for 3 big swoon-worthy reasons: 1. It has a pretty pastel palette in vintage tones of pink and gray 2. It’s topped with a gorgeous crown of plump peonies, and 3. I love the ombre design – it gives the cake a modern meets vintage vibe all rolled in to one! Yes, I’m sold. Bring down the hammer! That will be ‘one fabulous wedding cake to go‘ thanks!

Bride Jennifer shares: We knew we wanted a wedding with classic, fun and romantic elements. The Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, MN  with its Classical/Baroque architecture was the perfect venue for our ceremony. The reception was held in the ballroom of the recently renovated Grand Hotel just blocks away. The creative team at Honeydew Creative did a perfect job incorporating our color theme of pink and gray before, during and after our big day by designing the following custom items: save the date cards, invitations, postage stamps, hospitality bags for guests staying at the hotel, candy-bar labels, wine labels, dinner menu, card box and thank you cards.

There were many other personalized touches that we devised on our own. The groom forego the common black tuxedo look and instead wore a made-to-measure charcoal suit by Hart Schaffner Marx, with a made to measure white shirt from Hubert White, and traditional plaid wedding tie from Kent Wang. At the ceremony we utilized the amazing performers available through the Basilica hiring a string quartet, trumpeter, organist and soloist. The ceremony, the wedding-party trolley ride that followed, and the reception were captured by Princess Bride Videographers who did a fantastic job editing hours of footage into a single, coherent, cinematic HD video. Some other personalized touches included hand-written note cards for every guest staying at our reception site welcoming them to the wedding and included some helpful tips for the weekend. Our wedding favors included our favorite wine (Ravenswood Zinfandel) with personalized wine labels and candy bar.

Our favorite moments included:

  • Seeing each other for the first time!!!
  • Walking down the aisle to my new husband and seeing all our friends and family standing in the church!!
  • Getting on the Trolley after the wedding and able to relax with all of our close friends and family!
  • Our first dance
  • Brides dance with Dad!
Congratulations Jennifer & Spencer and thank you for sharing with us all your lovely details!

Bride Kait shares:

I NEVER actually dreamed of my wedding, so as soon as we got engaged I had a lot of decisions to make and only 7 months to plan. To help myself, I searched a lot of blogs for inspiration and found as much DIY details as possible. We decided on an outdoor reception with a rustic chic feel. It was important we created a comfortable atmosphere without being too casual, so the idea of a tent with amber/candle glow lighting with a mix of soft romantic and rustic natural details was perfect. As I’m a pretty simple person, I chose a neutral palette with creams, pale pink and gray to go with the rustic chic feel. The ceremony was at a gorgeous old church – the Basicilla of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Norfolk, VA., where we were allowed to use our own priest, a catholic Navy Chaplin. The reception was at the Hermitage Museum and Gradens in Norfolk, VA – a great outdoor location near the water with a HUGE magnolia tree.

DIY Details:

Most of the wedding was DIY. We had a tent set up, hung mason jars with candles from the magnolia tree and lined the waters edge with shepherd hooks. We made the tables for the reception bar, cake display and guest book out of sawhorses (built by my husband) and old white-washed doors. For the table assignment we used an old glass door (again which we white-washed) and wrote the table numbers/names on the glass . Mom and I wrapped the mason jars in cloth or twine, made the chalkboard table numbers and the labels for the jam favors.  Simply Perfect Events also helped a ton by finding awesome linens and plates to go with our feel, designing the chandeliers, making the cocktail seating out of bails of hay covered in cloth and the cocktail tables out of old windows and glass!  For our guest book we covered a book in burlap and asked guests to put their Polaroids into it and write little notes. I LOVE how the guest book turned out and have looked at it many times since. The bridesmaids dresses were from J. Crew ( on sale for $75 – what a steal!). For dessert, we had cupcakes in chocolate peanut butter, lemon and red velvet and a one tier lemon wedding cake for ‘cutting the cake.’

What made your wedding unique?

We married on my grandparents 56th wedding anniversary and were lucky enough to have them there. The headpiece I wore was the same my grandmother wore on her wedding day 56 years before.

What was your biggest challenge?

Planning the wedding in a few short months whilst all the other stuff that was going on with college, moving, the military, etc. Honestly, I can’t thank the people who helped me enough! I didnt think I could plan a great wedding in less than a year but it’s obviously possible.

Your favorite moments?

OMG…the whole day! My husband and I had been together nearly 9 years when we got married. It was a great feeling to be marrying my best friend especially with all our friends and family there. We also felt so lucky to have people travel from all over the world to be with us on our special day.

How would you sum up your wedding day?

It was a great day! Although nice,  I don’t think the details or weather, etc make your day. I think it’s really about who you marry and the love you’re surrounded by with friends and family. I never dreamed of my wedding, but Im sure if I had the actual day would have far exceeded my dreams.

Congratulations Kait on a beautiful day and proving how a little wet weather can never ‘rain on your wedding parade!’

Elegant San Diego Beachside Wedding by The Youngrens

Usually when you think of beach wedding you don’t think ‘elegant.’ But this stylish affair by The Youngrens manages to beautifully combine a classy seaside wedding with all the typical elements of the beach. Perched atop the grand Pacific Terrace at L’Auberge Del Mar with sweeping views of the Pacific ocean, Carly and Travis celebrated their stunning seaside ceremony and cocktail hour whilst watching the sun set. The lovely ladies at Jolie Fleur and Alison of L’Auberge helped design all the elegant details including sand dollars for the tables (named after the couple’s favorite locations in San Diego), a lovely peach, navy and grey colour palette for the flowers and bridesmaids, and delightfully delicious starfish clad cupcakes for dessert. Guests were treated to gourmet cuisine and the soothing sounds of a string quartet whilst taking in the stunning ocean views. It’s easy to see how this elegantly understated wedding with it’s soft and pretty details took a typical beach theme and transformed it into one romantic classy affair.Beach Wedding ReceptionBeachside Ceremony SettingBeachside BridePeach and White Wedding DecorWedding Aisle DecorBeachside WeddingString QuartetBeach Themed WeddingBeachside Wedding DecorationsSand Dollars Wedding TableSan Diego Wedding CoupleNavy, Grey and White Wedding ColoursSan Diego Beachside CeremonyPeach and White Aisle DecorPeach and White Ceremony FlowersBeachside Wedding CuisineBeachside Wedding TableNavy and White Wedding PaletteBeachside Wedding ReceptionBride and Groom Chair DecorSan Diego Beachside WeddingBeach Cupcake DessertBeachside Wedding Venue San DiegoDel Mar San Diego WeddingWedding Couple Sparklers

From beautiful bride Carly:

What was your wedding vision?

My vision for our wedding was a celebration of love – not just between Travis and I, but also our two families and groups of friends coming together for the first time. In terms of decor, I knew I always wanted to keep things simple. I dreamt of getting married in Del Mar for many years so having Seaside Park and the Del Mar coastline as the backdrop was plenty decoration on its own.

What inspired your wedding theme, colors and decor?

Del Mar is where I was born and where Travis and I started dating, so even though we weren’t living there, we knew that the location should be the theme. Peach is my favorite color and peach roses are my favorite flower, so those two components had to be in the decor. I looked on the internet to find colors to compliment peach and found a picture of a man in a navy tux with a silver vest and a peach boutonniere – the three colors together are elegant and summery without being too bold – just perfect for me! One of my favorite decoration elements was my version of a “table number.” Each table was named after a famous San Diego beach! My mom, sister and I went to a seaside decor shop and found large sand dollars to write the names of the beaches on. For party favors, we provided our guests with chocolates from Chuao, a San Diego-based chocolatier.

What do you feel made your wedding unique?

In honor of the many friends and family who flew in from North Carolina for the wedding, I came up with a recipe for a white wine sangria made with Century Table White Wine from the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. It was a delicious surprise at cocktail hour which our guests loved!  Something else very special to us was Travis’ Uncle Jim was our officiant.

Did you include any DIY or personalized details?

The party favors we assembled by hand. My mother-in-law is very handy in the craft department so she made the adorable little “C & T” tags that adorned our chocolates. Our biggest DIY project was actually our wedding invitations. It was a group effort between my Mom, my mother-in-law, my sister and myself. My sister designed the wording, my mom hand painted roses on each invitation and my mother-in-law cut, assembled and packaged everything. They were truly small works of art!

What was your biggest challenge?

I had two major challenges – the first was planning a wedding from out of town. I currently live in Honolulu, HI and trying to coordinate everything from here was difficult at times. Due to tight finances, I could only make two trips to San Diego in the year before the wedding – so I couldn’t have pulled it off without my “Moms” and my wedding coordinators! The other challenge was my husband was deployed during most of the planning process. He left in January of  2011 and didn’t return until 10 days before the wedding! While it was wonderful he put his faith in me to make a lot of decisions, it was really hard some days not having him around to ask him if I was doing the right thing, if we should spend more money here or there, etc. Again, without the support of my family, I couldn’t have pulled it off.

What were your favorite moments?

I can’t pick any one moment – there were too many favorites! I loved that my best friend of 20 years helped me put on my wedding shoes. I loved how I sat in the sun and enjoyed a mimosa (or two…) with my sister and cousins before getting ready. I loved how Mom woke up with me at 7 am the morning of the wedding and encouraged me to eat a big breakfast. I loved that Travis and I chose to do a First Look so we could spend time together before seeing anyone else.  I loved when I was taking pictures before the ceremony, I saw my college friends walking to our cocktail hour and they cheered for me from the street. I loved how a little girl I saw in the park said ‘I was the most beautiful bride she had ever seen.’ I love that I walked down the aisle to a string quartet playing the reprise of Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid and I love that my husband kissed me and spun me around during our first dance!

My wedding was truly one of the best days of my life so far and I could go on forever about it!

Thanks Carly for sharing with us the details of your beautiful day. Congratulations to you both!
