Our Dating Story (Her version)

It all began on a snowy evening back in January of 2010. We met through mutual friends at a local ski resort while enjoying a country music band and a few cocktails. What started off as a harmless conversation, talking about “business,” led to 10 months filled with thousands of text messages (technology has really put a damper on the romance of pursuing a significant other), a few late night phone conversations, the occasional happy hour BUT never an actual date. That all changed on Christmas of 2010. We spent the evening together playing cards, exchanging gifts, drinking wine, sharing stories and having what would be one of the best nights of both of our lives and the start of the next chapter in our love story. That “official” first date came three days later.

Long distance was a word that we knew all too well. From the time we met until the time we were engaged, we never lived within 2 hours of one another. Distance never seemed to keep us apart though. Our evenings were filled with Skype sessions and our weekends with trips to Philadelphia and State College…there was also the occasional weekday trip as well. Crazy kids, you just couldn’t keep us apart! That distance that we always seemed to complain of proved to make our relationship even stronger. Fast forward a year and a half later. Ashley had won a trip though work to Las Vegas.

The Proposal (His Version)

Getting ready for dinner that evening, I had the entire proposal planned out. After a great sushi dinner, we were going to walk down the strip to the Bellagio to watch the fountain show. I had the exact time of our show, 7:20 PM. All of the day’s commotion to this point had me worked up: getting a ring from Pennsylvania to Las Vegas through airport security without Ashley knowing was quite the task. Every ten minutes I checked my wallet to make sure the ring was still in place. I was a nervous wreck and Ashley kept asking, “Honey, is something wrong? Are you not having fun?”

We arrived at dinner around 5:30 at Sushi Roku, and I was constantly checking my watch; we couldn’t be late for the 7:20 show. Anyone who has the slightest clue about me knows that I absolutely love to eat. I picked at our meal and barely finished my drink. Ashley asked, “Honey, don’t you feel well? Is your dinner not good?” Again, I told her I was tired from the long day. We paid our bill and started our venture down the strip towards the Bellagio. The timing appeared to be just right; we would arrive a few minutes before the show to get the perfect spot.

As we arrived at the fountains, I looked for the perfect background to have our picture taken as I proposed. We were in place, and I spotted what appeared to be a tech savvy couple I would ask to take our picture. By this time I had the ring in my front pocket, checking every ten seconds to make sure it was in place. The show was set to begin, and I asked the couple to take our picture as the fountains started. After handing them the camera, I removed the ring from my pocket and walked over to Ashley. I went down on one knee and popped the question. Immediately Ashley placed her hands on her face and repeatedly asked, “Are you serious!? You’re kidding me! This can’t be real.” After asking her a second time I said, “Ashley, please don’t make me ask you again!” She finally said YES and I placed the ring on her finger. I came to my feet and we kissed, taking in the moment as the camera snapped away. This was the start to the best vacation and the rest of our lives together!

Styling Details

From the photographer: Simplicity was key for us in designing this pretty Summer/Spring shoot. We wanted it to incorporate glitter and sequinned elements in a summery garden setting. Choosing three colors – blush, mint, and gold within the pastel family – we focused on delicate and elegant details accented with gold. We featured a real life couple who just had their one year anniversary and still looked at each other like the day they were married.

The table was set with a satin mint colored linen and topped with a sheer featuring shimmering strands of gold. It was anchored by a grand candelabra floral centerpiece incorporating spring blooms of blush and white roses, white hydrangeas, rich green succulents and dangling mosses. Simple mercury glass votives and blush glass vases sat alongside a couple of sweet paper maché birds. Simple gold chargers were the resting place for china featuring delicate floral pattern highlighted by gold cutlery, ivory floral napkins, and paper menu. Gold chivari chairs were adorned with delicate strands of satin, grosgrain, and sparkly ribbons to bring a decidedly whimsical and spring like quality to the setting. Our invitation suite which included invitations and RSVP cards, seating cards, paper menu, and table number was created using blush, gold, and pastel mints with a graceful floral design.

The bride donned an Allure gown with an asymmetrically rouched bodice and deep v neckline. To complete the look we pulled in a gold satin ribbon tied around her waist and topped it with a sparkling rhinestone bridal belt from Belts by Marital Bridals. Belt and veil were be found at LA Bridal Boutique.

Glam Black and Gold Wedding in Monterey California

When I announce a wedding to be up there with my favourites, it’s a pretty big deal, considering I fall head-over-heels for at least 10 weddings a week. But I’m going to be up straight. This glam wedding by Studio 13 Designs is a bona fide favorite. No surprises there, when you have Italian glamour, black and gold details and a location that is one of my favourite places in the US of A… the picturesque seaside locale of Carmel, Monterey. Sigh. Sigh. Double sigh.

Wedding Highlights:

Brittany and Antonio were married on a stunning day in Carmel and their day was a beautiful, family filled celebration with gorgeous handmade details all around. Their wedding was filled with Italian glam–with a gold and black theme and glittery details everywhere! There were so many special and personal touches—both veils were made by the bride’s aunt, and all of the flowers were designed and executed by the her mother. Authentic Italian cookies were provided by the groom’s sister (which were to die for!) and the favors and the “love” marquee were hand made by bride. I was blown away by the time and love that was poured into their wedding day as they finally joined together as husband and wife surrounded by so much support.

Modern Whimsical Wedding in Black, White, Gold & Pink

Black and white and gold all over, with a touch of pink – what’s not to love about this fun color palette beautifully curated by the talented Haydee of Sweetest Celebrations. An elegant black tie wedding is elevated to new heights with subtle accents in gold, and a flash of hot pink brings an unexpected whimsical flair to the event.

modern-whimsical-wedding-black-white-gold

The Inspiration:

The modern bride is someone who takes a classic and romantic gown with a full ruffled skirt and gives it new life with a fun organza flower. Classic stripes in black and white bring a modern feel to the event, from the drinks served under a circus like tent in stripes, to the fun boutonniere worn by the groom.

Gold flatware and plating treats guests like royalty, but the striped straws keep the event casual, while adding a touch of whimsy at the same time. Pink and gold are scattered throughout the wedding in unexpected places — the tiny flags on the straws, the monogram cake topper, and some fun balloons that can be used as photo props for the guests and bridal party.

This inspiration board is the perfect combination of the modern and whimsical. It is for the modern, hip couple that wants to have fun at their wedding, while still providing their guests with a beautifully elegant experience.

Hollywood Glamour Wedding Inspiration

Hey lovelies! It’s that time again for some gorgeous wedding inspiration from the lovely Haydee from Sweetest Celebrations. Take it away Haydee!

In a day and age where brides are turning to the past for wedding inspiration, it is difficult to stand out in a sea of vintage weddings, full of rustic and natural details.  Fear not, you can still channel your vintage goddess, but in a much more glamorous way.  If your wedding is not the perfect excuse for dolling up and being as glamorous as can be, when else can you indulge in decadent details that evoke glamour at every turn? I created this inspiration board for the bride who wants to feel and look like a glamour queen on her wedding day.  These images evoke a subtle Hollywood Glamour mood that is perfect for the bride who wants to be surrounded in gold and shimmery details, and be the star of her event.

Hollywood Glamour Wedding Inspiration

A beautiful gown is a must, but it must be sleek and chic and overflowing with beautiful details, like this perfect sheath dress covered in gold beading with the drop-dead back detail, that leaves them breathless even as you walk away.  Keep the hair chic and elegant with a perfect updo highlighted with a sparkly vintage brooch, with makeup as effortless and flawless like those in the movies.  Set the tone for your wedding with this perfect invitation in gold, and carry out the same theme to your escort cards for the guest’s seating.  The cake is simple yet decadent, with gold piping and a sweet brooch detail to accent the top tier.  Gold chandeliers at your venue allow you to focus on a clean design for your table settings, highlighted with gold and silver and a touch of blue for subtle color.  A sparkly cocktail to welcome your guests kicks off the evening and is sure to enchant all who attend.

I hope more brides embrace the beauty of the past in their own unique way.  Look to the past for inspiration but be sure to make your wedding unique by adding personal touches that speak to your personal style.

Sophisticated Plum Wedding by Kamila Harris Photography

Florentine Gardens Wedding

There is something so romantic about today’s wedding by Kamila Harris Photography. The pretty plum and pink infused hues, the grand ballroom reception, the pretty gold and silver details. It all comes together in a way that is very sophisticated without being pretentious, ever-so-chic without being overdone. But more than anything, it’s the insanely beautiful bride and her head-over-heels adoring beau that really makes our hearts sing.

From the photographer: Jenn and Andy first contacted me in early 2012, as they started planning their New Jersey wedding from their home in the UK. I had my first Skype client meeting with them, which was pretty funny since I am ridiculously awkward on camera – but it was very cool being able to speak to them, face to face, across the world! We met in person when they were here in New York a few months later finalizing some of their wedding plans. I was so excited about their wedding right from the start. I already loved The Estate at Florentine Gardens (especially in the fall), and I just couldn’t wait to see how this super cute couple’s day would turn out. And it turned out so awesome! Jenn was such a beautiful bride, Andy was a very handsome groom, and the whole wedding party was so much fun. I hope you enjoyed some of my favorite photos from their beautiful day!

What was the vision &/or theme for your wedding?

The driving force in planning our wedding was finding a beautiful place in Northern California where our guests could spend a weekend. Because the ceremony & reception would be held outdoors on a long summer day, we did not identify a theme but instead decided to maximize the outdoor natural beauty as much as possible and use it as our backdrop.

Traditional Hindu wedding ceremonies take place around a fire; so when Seth & I wrote the ceremony, we decided to have our bridesmaids, groomsmen, and family members each carry a candle to the chupdap (combination of chuppah and mandap) and set it on a table. Our ceremony would then take place around a collection of flames built by our community.

Tell us about your Wedding Style

Indian brides traditionally wear red for good luck and prosperity. My incredible aunt, who lives in Hong Kong, had the red sari designed and made in India. I paired the outfit with flat sandals (to comfortably walk in the grass and easily take off my shoes for the ceremony) and family jewelry (It was so special to wear my mother’s diamond bangles, and my late grandmother’s gold, diamond-studded safety pin.)  Seth wore a beautiful custom charcoal suit made by Duchess (based in Portland) with Vans shoes and black and red argyle socks (to complement my sari). Bouquets were put together by Blue House Farms using whatever flowers were fresh and beautiful at the time.  Instead of carrying flowers, our wedding party carried candles.

For the reception, Seth and I both changed our clothes. I changed into a WTOO by Watters gown (Zora) and incredibly comfortable and fun peep-toe pumps (made by Rockport & Adidas – I’m serious about my dancing!) I wore family jewelry, and at the reception, my beloved grandfather slipped on one of my late grandmother’s diamond bangles onto my wrist – another moment I’ll never forget. Seth changed into a traditional Indian kurta and kept his vans on. Just after my grandfather slipped the bangle onto my wrist, he adorned Seth with a gold necklace from the family.

Because I was wearing red, I asked the bridesmaids to wear cream colored dresses. I had each bridesmaid choose their own dress so they could control the style, fit, and budget. It worked out well!  I loved how everyone’s personality and style came through. They each also incorporated a red dahlia into their hair. Our flower girl wore a red Indian dress to match me and carried a bouquet down the aisle.

The groomsmen all wore gray suits (of their own choosing) with suspenders, Vans sneakers, and a combination of green/blue/turquoise argyle socks. Their boutonnieres were made by Blue House Farms (I loved how they turned out – one of my favorite details. Thistles are the best weed out there!)

Decorations & Flowers

Our color palette for printed materials was simple and natural – brown kraft paper with the occasionally green or turquoise accent (trees, ocean..).

We wanted to keep the focus on the beautiful rolling hills, tree groves, and ocean that surrounded us; decorations were minimal with strings of outdoor lights and white linens on the tables accented by bright bouquets of colorful flowers from a local organic farm (Blue House Farm: http://bluehouseorganicfarm.com).

Wedding Cake & Favors

There’s a delicious strawberry farm just a few miles south of Costanoa (Swanton Berry Farm: http://www.swantonberryfarm.com) . When visiting the area, we often stopped for a few chocolate covered strawberries or piece of strawberry shortcake. We were so excited to order an oversized strawberry shortcake, collection of berry pies, and dozens of chocolate covered strawberries for our wedding day dessert.

For wedding favors, we assembled welcome bags that our guests received upon arriving/checking in with snacks, drinks, information about the area, and flip flops.  At the reception, we put out brown to-go boxes that we decorated for guests to pack up extra dessert for later.

Did you include any DIY or personalized details?

We did a lot of DIY – it was fun and useful to keep our budget on track.  One detail that comes to mind is the ‘chupdap.’ In Judaism the couple marries under a Chupah, which symbolizes the home the couple will build together.  It has open sides to welcome all friends and family in.  In Hinduism, the couple marry in a Mandap, the four pillars of which represent the four parents of the couple, without whose support, love, and blessings, the marriage would not have come to take place.  We were so excited about this parallel and Seth built the structure with the help of his groomsmen.

Was there anything that made your wedding unique?

Honestly, our community made our wedding unique & unforgettable.  In particular, our sisters, cousins, and bridesmaids got together to perform a medley of Bollywood dances, and the groomsmen performed a special rendition of “Just Dropped In” from The Big Lebowski – with custom lyrics, dance moves… everything. They looked amazing in their suspenders, shaking their groove thing. They each then presented me with special gifts to help me out as Seth’s wife (a combination of funny, sweet, sarcastic jokes about sweet Seth, and a really special moment between me and those amazing guys).  These details – the ones we had no idea about and could not plan for – made our wedding unique and memorable. We are so lucky to be surrounded by such incredible people.

What did you find challenging?

In the beginning, it was challenging to “turn off” the planning. We quickly learned to set a cut off time, and come 9 or 10 pm on weeknights after work, we simply wouldn’t talk wedding planning anymore. It was one of our best ideas.

What were your favorite moments?

Too many to count! The first time we saw each other before the ceremony in a sweet little reveal orchestrated by Lindsey & Nathan; pausing during the ceremony to turn around and look at our guests (a moment we had written into the ceremony that turned out to be so powerful for us and fun for our guests); watching Seth dance with his grandmother; dancing with my father to ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ (unrehearsed but just a perfect reenactment of Saturday mornings at home growing up); and all of the down time around Costanoa. We invited our guests to come spend the weekend with us, and those little moments by the fire, walking around the grounds, or bumping into someone on a trail were so special; it really gave our friends and family an opportunity to get to know each other.  Last but not least, Costanoa has a hot tub, and Seth and I were able to sneak away on both Friday and Saturday night for a quick dip – it was one more amazing way to unwind, relax, and take it all in, under the stars.

Your advice to Bride’s & Groom’s planning now?

Be true to yourself, forget about the “supposed to’s,” and keep it simple. At the end of it all, you won’t really remember what exactly went into your welcome bags, or what color your blah-blah-blah was – you’ll remember how you felt.
