Bride Nancy shares the details:

The Proposal

We are avid Vegas travellers, so on my 30th birthday, we met up with 10 other friends in Vegas to celebrate! On the night of my birthday, I noticed one of my friends crying! Whilst I was wondering what was wrong with her? (she already knew…), Dylan came up to me and said, “I’m sorry your gift I sent didn’t arrive yet,” (it was a pair of wicked platforms from my favourite designer Iron Fist) –  “But I wanted to give you something right now.” Dylan dropped to one knee and held up the bling! I couldn’t stop screaming “Are you serious?! Are you kidding me?!” over and over. I called my Mom at 5.30am Winnipeg time. She thought we had won the money jackpot!

Wedding Style

I’m very eclectic, so I didn’t really have a theme. Our wedding was based around the concept of the things we loved and that were important to us…magic, relationships, and just a plain ol’ wicked time!

The wedding invitations were designed to look like an old newspaper (11”x14,” folded), complete with two articles – one about how we met and the other about our engagement. The ads featured information about places to stay, directions, ceremony information and the breakfast buffet. The RSVP’s were a tear off coupon that said “in order to reserve seats you had to fill in the blanks and send back before the contest closes on a certain date.”

I didn’t want to spend a ton on flowers and then have to throw them out. My bouquet was made up of 12 heart stems (discovered at Dollarama around Valentine’s Day), which I combined with two giant red ostrich feathers, a couple of smaller feathers, and then wrapped it with teal ribbon to match my dress and added rhinestones. The bridesmaid bouquets also had heart stems but with baby blue sequin stems and champagne coloured ostrich feathers wrapped with champagne ribbon. Now, I have my bouquet in my studio that looks as fresh as it did on my wedding day!

Dress & Boutonnieres

My wedding dress was lovingly handmade by my Mom from a $9 vintage dress (with inspiration from the blog, A Beautiful Mess). The boy’s boutonnieres were made by my sister from my design. They featured feathers, glitter and beads.

The wedding was at a campground just out of the city and the scenery was awesome! We’re cabin people.. so this was just absolutely PERFECT! We got married beside a rushing river, under a giant tree, then moved the party just across the grass to a beautiful cabana with wooden beams, chandeliers, and shutters on two sides that opened up and let in the fresh air. There were some cute surprises during our ceremony including 2 secret ring bearers. The rings were randomly taped under 2 chairs and at the right time of the ceremony everyone had to flip their chairs over – it was such a great idea! We also had fans for our guest. These were displayed in a box with a sign saying “JOIN THE FAN CLUB”. The fans had “I’m a Fan of Nancy & Dylan” on the front, and all wedding party info on the back. •My nephews drew the “Here Comes the Bride” sign for my entrance – so cute.

The seating chart was SO FUN! Everyone had their own ticket which said their name and “Scratch until you find your table.”.  Each guest’s place setting had a placemat designed with our cartoon characters and included a crossword puzzle, word search, a maze, and the best quote about breakfast for dinner! We also had special ones made for the kids. The tables were covered in brown tablecloths with strips of kraft paper rolls so people could draw on them during the night! The centrepieces were vintage tins and glass jars/decanters with amazing glitter decorations and a single stem of white hydrangea, crayons and giant white diamonds. We even had a magician do some amazing table magic throughout the night!

Wedding Menu

We served a breakfast buffet for dinner (who doesn’t love breakfast for dinner?! It’s a staple in our house!!), complete with waffles, eggs, bacon and omelette station. There was the most delicious mini sticky buns from a local baker, a chocolate fountain for mounds of fruit, and chocolate milk on tap! For dessert we had a buffet of some of our favourite treats – nanimo bars, gluten free brownies, Americana cookies, Fork Cookies, Nibs, Lemon Tarts, Banana Cream tarts, sour soothers, the best organic/vegan carrot cake and a spectacular banana/chocolate cake that was designed to look like a huge stack of pancakes! Later in the night we had pizza delivered and Dylan and I walked around the cabana and handed out boxes of pizza! This was one of the highlights! We also had a bonfire later on and had ingredients for s’mores.

Hot chocolate cones, with chocolate chips, cinnamon hearts and mini marshmallows

Other DIY & Personalized Details
  • Donations were collected for the Winnipeg Humane Society if people wanted to see us kiss!
  • We hung a handmade glitter sign with “Nancy + Dylan =4 Eva” above the main wedding table. We also had a red glitter sign above the dessert table saying “Goodie Goodie Gumdrops” (my sister and I always said this when we got excited).
  • Guests were given mason jars as glasses. Each jar had a tag for the guest to sign their name and a cute poem with instructions.
  • Signature drinks included a chick drink: Cranberry Splash, and a dude drink: Pucker up Sucker.
  • Our guestbook was custom designed and included questions for guests to answer rather then just signing their names.
  • Through the night, guests could help themselves to a popcorn machine and a gumball machine filled with jelly beans (pennies provided).
  • Our campsite and camper was decorated amazingly by our friends!

Snow White Inspired Wedding Shoot by Cathy Lee Photography

Kathryn and Michael were married in 2011, but unfortunately their wedding day was rained out. With a soggy venue and nowhere to take images, their photographer Cathy Lee offered to re-take their wedding images as a styled shoot. This lovely couple were very touched by Cathy’s gesture and quickly envisioned their ideal wedding shoot – a “Snow White” inspired theme. As you’ll see, Cathy Lee put together a wonderful team who magically created this fairytale fantasy for a most deserving pair!

From the Event Planner: When we were told about this couple, we knew instantly they deserved a gorgeous wedding! The inspiration was a classic take on Snow White. We created a styled shoot that wasn’t literal to the story but more elements of the fairytale. In other words, we took Snow White out of the fairy tale book and into the real world.

The castle was located in the Merrimack area on a quiet hill and was the ideal fantasy backdrop. In keeping with the couple’s request for a classic look which included elements of fun, we worked closely with Soiree (stationary) to create the concept of the fantasy stationery and added a splash of creative cakes and classic florals to the styled shoot. A romantic setting was created by setting the table against the castle and adding elegant red and white linens.

The second table setting allowed us to play with the idea of the woods, dwarfs and nature. Adding texture to the linen  would allow the viewers to see a more nature-like side of Snow White. All of these elements we brought to life to create the perfect storybook setting and a dream come true for this amazing couple.

Benny and Joon Wedding Theme Inspiration

We’re totally smitten with this next dose of inspiration. If you’re a fan of the old 1993 Johnny Depp movie ‘Benny and Joon‘ then hold on to your hats, because this styled shoot by the creative Elizabeth Zuluaga is nothing short of dreamy. Not only does it feature a Milk Bar shoot with plenty of fun and quirky appeal (just think cute E session inspo guys!), but also a beautiful riverside wedding styled shoot with gorgeous vintage styling, breathtaking natural light and a stunning up-do I totally have to try! Dive right in and lap up the lovely.

Benny and Joon Inspiration Shoot

Photographer Elizabeth shares her inspiration: I had been wanting to do a styled shoot for quite some time and seeing as how Benny and Joon is one of my favorite movies, it isn’t hard to see where the inspiration came from. It all began three months ago when I was reorganizing some things at home and came across one of my favorite movies, Benny and Joon. Later that day I took a shower, got dressed and whilst blow drying my hair it hit me. A Benny and Joon inspired wedding shoot! I thought, what would it look like if Benny and Joon got married? What would they wear? What would their story look like if the movie just kept going? I wanted to do two looks in order to showcase the diner scene in the movie and of course, their “wedding day.

Everything models Adam and Jennifer wore was picked out carefully from head to toe by yours truly and my wonderful hair/makeup stylist, Michelle Graves. Earrings, suspenders, shoes, even Jennifer’s socks! I would also like to point out that the wedding dress is vintage from the 1950s. So much of the film is about Sam’s eccentric style and Joon’s simple taste, so I worked diligently with my makeup/hair artist to recreate the look and feel of the characters, but also keep it a bit modern as well (with a little Liz flair). I made sure every accessory, sock/shoe and hair placement was whimsical, but with a slight edge. I wanted to be true to the film itself as well, but with a calm, beautiful approach in the posing, mannerisms and chemistry between the models.

I would have to say my favorite moment of the day was near the end of the shoot when the light was almost gone. We kept chasing the light, laughing, and running trying to get the perfect shot. I finally found this lovely little spot which was canopied by trees with a beautiful opening of the sky. This is where I shot them sitting down and Adam kissing Jen’s forehead, which turned out to be my favorite images of the day.

New Orleans Mardi Gras Wedding Theme Inspiration

New Orleans Mardi Gras StyleFancy a Mardi Gras theme for your wedding or next big event? Then we have just the inspiration for you in this beautiful styled shoot from Carrie Wildes Photography. The Inspiration: {Photographer Carries shares}: I lived in New Orleans for a little while but didn’t get to experience Mardi Gras so I’m always wishing I’m there on Fat Tuesday:-) Part of what I love about my profession is coming up with creative ideas to continue improving and making them happen! So this was a little bit of inspiration that turned into a really cool shoot and it will even be featured soon in Tampa Bay Wedding Styles online magazine which is also pretty exciting. We actually did the session on fat Tuesday and Ybor is as close as I could get to the French Quarter feel. Feathers, bead covered florals and mask, beautiful wedding gown and fabulous models, Bobby and Cienne at the Roosevelt set the scene. I just wanted a simple, rough background and an alleyway I could light purple so we used a video light and off camera flash to create a dramatic effect. Here’s a little behind the scenes and also some of my favs.

Australia Wedding Theme Inspiration

If your wedding date happens to fall on or around our nation’s great day “Australia Day, you may want to incorporate a little Australiana into your wedding theme. I’m not saying to going over the top with red, white and blue colours or a parade of stars and stripes everywhere you turn (yes, waaaay too ‘tacky’ for a wedding). But, rather an elegant white wedding palette accented with strategically placed pops of bright red and cobalt blue. It would look festive and fabulous. Here is an inspiration board with ideas I came up with for a stylish wedding using a red, white and blue colour palette along with Australian touches. Little red and blue details like the red sash on the bride’s wedding gown, the red rimmed plateware with a blue napkin or a boutonniere tied with blue twine, are the type of touches which really make an impact in an elegant way. I also adore the fantastic red, white and blue bold printed invitations which instantly say to your guests they’re invited to party full of fun, whimsy and savvy style. These theme ideas could also be used to to inspire the decorations for any Australia Day party or backyard BBQ with friends. So what are you waiting for? Let’s get into the spirit and prepare to really enjoy the Australia Day holiday weekend!Australia Day Wedding Theme

Hockley Valley Snowboard Themed Wedding by Christine Reid Photography

The ski hill has always been a prominent part of Jen and Adam’s relationship. They played as kids on the ski hill, they met as adults on the ski hill and they fell in love on the ski hill. (Are you starting to see the theme here?)  Naturally, Adam proposed to Jen on the ski hill and they tied the knot at the same ski hill resort where they originally met. It only made sense to incorporate their common passion by creating a snowboard theme for their wedding day. This original and fun concept was important to them and added that special element making their day that much more personal and true to them as a couple. Their pretty celebration held at the picturesque Hockley Valley and captured perfectly by Christine Reid, included plenty of unique and whimsical touches. With ski themed table signs, a picture frame kissing booth, snowboard themed wedding cake and the groom singing up a storm for his bride, it was a day full of surprises and fun all round.Snowboard Themed Wedding OntarioPink Bouquet Taupe ShoesSnowboard Theme WeddingLavender Jars Wedding AisleSnowboard Themed Wedding CakeOntario Canada Snowboard WeddingOntario BrideWindow Frame Kissing BoothSki Themed Wedding TablesGroom Singing For Bride

Planning a Whimsical Wedding?  Here is are some Fun Wedding Ideas you’ll love . . .

Fun Wedding Ideas For Whimsical Weddings

A wedding full of creativity and fun ideas is always a memorable one for you and your guests. If you’re looking for inspiration to come up with unique ideas for a whimsical wedding, then a great place to start is with your childhood. Tap into your inner child and reflect back to your childhood for inspiration. What made you laugh until your sides hurt?  What made you jump up down with excitement and anticipation? Think back and remember what activities gave you the most joy – your favorite sweets and snacks, your best summer holidays, the most unforgettable birthday parties and so on. All these wonderful childhood memories create a fantastic source of inspiration for a fun-filled whimsical wedding that will not only be unique to you but truly personal. Here are some fun wedding ideas and inspiration full of child-like appeal. They’re bound to infuse plenty of creative whimsy into your wedding day.

Fun Wedding Theme

Outdoor Weddings & Garden Soirees

Much like a kid’s birthday party, a  fun wedding should be full of energy, happiness and plenty of excitement. A spring or summer wedding is always a great match for a fun and whimsical wedding theme. Fresh air, sunshine, pretty gardens and gorgeous scenery always puts everyone in a happy party mood. An outdoor wedding also perfectly complements pretty whimsical decor, outdoor games and a fun relaxed atmosphere for your guests.  If a casual laid back wedding is your vibe, then consider something unique ideas such as a picnic wedding, rustic ranch BBQ or retro 1960s beach party theme.

Fun Wedding Ideas

Fun Wedding Themes

Another idea for a creative wedding full of fun is to go with an overall theme. You can either use touches of the theme throughout your day or completely deck out your wedding in the theme’s style. Fun and whimsical wedding ideas can include recreating your childhood fantasy or favorite fairytale, children’s storybook or Hollywood movie. If your guy prefers to keep the “girly” factor toned down, then you could always go for a Carnivale, 1950s Retro, or Vintage Glam theme.

Whimsical Wedding
Whimsical Wedding Theme

Popular whimsical themes for a wedding also include the Butterfly, Ballerina, Fairy or Angel style of theme. Any of these themes can be magical choices when styled tastefully. Just be careful not to go overboard. Another gorgeous theme full of whimsy (and one of my favorites ), is the Secret Garden. This theme is inspired by the popular children’s book (of the same title), written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The story takes place towards the end of the Edwardian era – an elegant era when luxury, glamor and fantasy were in vogue. If you’re looking for a theme where you can indulge in romantic flowing dresses, dreamy decor and twinkling tree lights, then the Secret Garden wedding is definitely for you.

Secret Garden Wedding

Fun Wedding Colors

To truly embrace your inner child, have fun with vibrant colors in your wedding color palette (remember kid’s aren’t shy when using color!). For a youthful fun wedding atmosphere think bright, upbeat and energetic shades. Be as bold as you dare and experiment with pops of electric green, sunshine yellow, hot pink or zesty oranges!

Fun Wedding Colors

Whimsical Decorations

You can be really creative when decorating a fun wedding theme. Once you have decided on your color palette, choose uplifting decorations full of whimsy that immediately say ‘let’s party!’  Pretty paper decorations always add a whimsical touch (and are easy to DIY if you prefer).  Use colorful pinwheels and kites, strands of pretty fabric garlands, or fluffy cheerful pom-poms. Hanging paper lanterns (like those from Luna Bazaar) not only do they add instant beauty to avenue, but also keep your decor budget in check.

Balloons add fun to a party atmosphere, but to achieve a more stylish look go with extra large balloons or balloons on a large scale. Also, everything old-school in decor is new again. Colored confetti traditionally used for showering the bridal couple, has made a come-back as a decoration. Likewise, sparklers can been seen at outdoor evening receptions and are popular with guests. Ramp up the whimsical factor by using props such as vintage bicycles, interesting furniture (to match your theme) and personalized or DIY details throughout your decor. Remember, the sweetest and most creative touches immediately introduce child-like wonder and adorable whimsy to your event.

Whimsical Decorations

Fun Wedding Games

Planning wedding games is another area where you can really get creative with ideas. Activities for your guests at the reception is an excellent way to get them mingling with each other and feeling involved with your wedding.  Just make sure the type of activity you choose is suitable for your venue and will suit guests of all ages.  For an outdoor wedding, lawns games such as bocci and croquet are very popular and give the occasion a wonderful old fashioned vintage appeal. For indoor events, try to arrange an activity to encourage your guests onto the dance floor. Novelty photo booths are also great for either outdoor or indoor weddings. Guests can have fun dressing up for the photos or posing in cut-outs booths. Imagine the funny photos you will have to re-visit in your wedding album.

Fun Wedding Games
Whimsical Cakes

Who doesn’t love cake?!  One of the biggest highlights of a wedding is the cake and a fun wedding is no exception. When looking for whimsical and fun cake inspiration think of a kid’s birthday cake. Lollipop colored icing, candy decorations and of course cupcakes are all a big part of the menu. Another a wonderful way to add whimsy to your cake, yet still retain an element of style, is to add a fun wedding cake topper. Fun toppers add a little novelty to your cake without going too over the top.

Whimsical Wedding Cakes

Fun Wedding Food

The food menu at a whimsical wedding gives you an opportunity to re-live your childhood favorites. If you include plenty of sweet colorful treats and food that puts a smile on everyone’s face and there won’t be any left-overs. For outdoor weddings, soda pop and ice-cream cones are an instant hit. Anything on a stick will appeal to all the kid’s at heart and of course, everyone loves a yummy dessert bar.

If you’re going with an overall theme, then carry it through to the food styling and choice of menu. For example, a Circus theme goes hand-in-hand with tubs of hot popcorn, tasty hot dogs and bright colored candy floss.  The menu for a glamorous 1920s cocktail party on the other hand, would include bite-size canapés, shrimp cocktails, sweet miniature puddings and stylish martinis and mint juleps.

Fun Wedding Food

Whimsical Stationery

Remember your wedding stationery design sets the tone for your whole event. Again, if your adopting a specific theme choose a stationery suite to match. Popular whimsical styles usually feature birds, birdcages, quaint florals or a slight retro style to the design. If you want a more novel style of wedding invitation then choose a design that immediately tells your guests they will be attending a light-hearted fun-filled affair.

Whimsical Wedding StationeryFun Wedding Invitations

Fun Wedding Favors

When it comes to fun or whimsical wedding favors your choices are endless. The best place to start is to decide whether you want an edible favor or a gift your guests can keep as a memento. Next, co-ordinate the style of favor with your wedding theme and colors. It is quite easy to choose a favor to match a themed wedding. Candy goes really well with a retro theme, whereas elegant votive candles suit stylish indoor affairs. Potted plants or butterfly themed favors are lovely for a garden wedding, whereas favors reflecting the sand and ocean highlight a beach theme.
