How to Plan a Summer Wedding

A summer wedding is simply magical. There is something in the air that excites, inspires, and invigorates the body, mind, and soul. Why not tie the knot in this sizzling and sunny season? Here is how to plan a Summer wedding from the ceremony to the wedding favors.

How To Plan A Summer Wedding

Summer Wedding Ideas

One of the perks of a summer wedding is the weather. Host your ceremony or entire reception outdoors. Many couples host a destination wedding, while others utilize city landmarks or even open floor plan (indoor to outdoor) venues. A vineyard is also an ultra-romantic wedding setting for guests and their wine loving guests. Also, adding an element of water will not only have a cooling effect, it will make a splash with your guests as well. Fountains, ponds, and pools make ideal backdrops for summer ceremonies and receptions.

Summer Wedding Colors

You can’t go wrong with yellow for summer weddings. This bright and sunny shade can’t help but make others smile and is oh-so-appropriate for the sultry season of summer. Shades of coral, gold, mint, or blush also work well for summer ceremonies.

Summer Wedding Colors

Summer Wedding Cakes

Bright, light, and airy colors can also be incorproated into the design scheme of your wedding cake. Choose a cake with some whimsical flair that reflects the sights of the season. A daisy adorned design is adorable, and a strawberry shortcake creation screams summer.

Summer Wedding Dresses

Summer wedding dresses should be light weight, flowing, and comfortable. Avoid anything too clingy. Satin tends to show sweat marks and doesn’t always flatter the figure when viewed in direct light. Opt for strapless styles that boast an empire waist, have cut out designs, or have a short hemline (especially for beach weddings). A little sparkle doesn’t hurt either. Say yes to crystal adorned hemlines or sequins sewn through out the body of the gown.

Summer Wedding Flowers

It’s nice to sit back, relax, and smell the flowers during summer months. Which fragrant flowers will you include in your bouquet? Consider carrying pretty peonies, succulents, and roses. Or, opt for something more earthy, unique, but chic. A bouquet filled with artichokes, celosias, agapanthus, and scabiosa pods will wow your guests and be completely unexpected, yet seasonal. But, when in doubt, a lush and light  bundle of roses, peonies, and hydrangeas will do the trick!

Summer Wedding Decorations

Let the party begin! When it comes to summer wedding décor keep it light hearted, romantic, and fun. String white paper lanterns from the tent or tree tops, hang long strands of flower petals and crystals from tree limbs, and even position comfortable cushioned seating around your outdoor venue. Set up “beach chair” place cards and play up warm and welcoming citrus tones. For favors, opt for bright flip flops so guests can dance the night away in comfort, or fans that showcase the summery theme (and temperatures!).

Wedding Highlights

From the photographer: Megan and Matt had a gorgeous wedding day with plenty of sunshine. They added sprinkles of turquoise to the day in their lovely invitation, their bridesmaids bright dresses, and their groomsmen’s awesome plaid socks. Other fun special touches included a bright red trolley to get around in and a bagpiper to greet guests and send Megan and Matt off as newlyweds after the ceremony. Our favorite detail: Megan wore a cathedral veil during the ceremony and then changed into a birdcage veil for the reception! They had a perfect wedding day and we are thrilled to share these images with you!

Yellow and White Outdoor Summer Wedding by Kamila Harris Photography

Yellow is a colour which immediately says ‘happy’ and this is exactly how I felt when I laid eyes on this gorgeous Summer wedding by Kamila Harris Photography. Filled to the brim with darling yellow and white details, from the beautiful bouquets to the tall centerpieces to the tempting lemon-covered cocktail table, it’s the kind of soiree which puts a spring in your step. Add to that a vintage inspired bride with a gorgeous birdcage veil, a romantic outdoor tent in an amazing location surrounded by mist, and you have an enchanting atmosphere better than a Hollywood set could hope for.Yellow and White Summer WeddingSummer Wedding OutdoorsSummer Wedding Ceremony Ideas

Bride Lauren Shares  The Details:

I knew I wanted a warmer weather wedding. I love summer and couldn’t even imagine getting married when it was cold! When I thought about my wedding, the words I used were “classic, simple but elegant, clean lines, and fun.” So to me, white and yellow encompassed all those things. I had originally thought about adding orange, but in the end, the white and yellow kept it the most simple and made the biggest impact.

Our ceremony was at St. Andrew’s Church in Newtown, PA. Unfortunately, my church I grew up in was under construction and wasn’t going to be ready in time. But a lot of my friends went to St. Andrew’s and it’s a beautiful church and was close to me so that’s why we went there.

The flowers I chose were callas and lillies for the most part. They were so classic and frankly, looked beautiful in white and yellow. My bridal bouquet was all yellow callas and lillies, plus a few other things, and the bridesmaid bouquets were white and yellow. Our centerpieces were also yellow and white flowers with water and candles.

I wanted the look to be classic and a little vintage. The girls dresses (from Priscilla of Boston) had cream lace at the top and yellow chiffon at the bottom with a black silk ribbon added to the waist to match the guys. They wore black satin peep toes to match the ribbons and pearl earrings (no necklaces). The guys wore black tuxes with bow ties and cummerbunds. They also had white callas boutonnieres and my husband had a yellow one.  For gifts, each bridesmaid received a purse they could use on the wedding day (2 girls got yellow, two got white, two got white crochet with flowers, and one got black), as well as a cream fabric ring with mini pearls in the middle which they all wore on the day as well.

Bride’s Style

I wanted to encompass a vintage feel to my look too. I had a bird cage veil and red satin shoes! (I thought about wearing red lipstick but decided it would be too much!). My dress was very simple and classic with a bow on the back to give it a modern touch.

DIY Details

I made our seating chart. I used a huge foam board and covered it in yellow and white patterned fabric which I bought from Mood. I hand wrote everyone’s names on the outside of mini envelopes and wrote their table numbers on the inside. Then, I got pins with yellow balls on them and, after painstakingly measuring the distance between each envelope, pinned them to the board alphabetically. I also did the favors myself. I bought the jars, filled them with yellow candy and glued little flowers on top. I also spray painted my B and G chair monograms. I didn’t have too much DIY – I’m not that creative!

I knew I wanted to be outside (again, Summer girl!) and under a tent. So the reception took place at the Pearl S. Buck Estate which was beautiful and secluded with really really pretty grounds. It’s a huge almost farmland like property with green grass and big trees. Our tent was super nice too compared to many others. What also grabbed me was the cobblestone patio in the back of the house where our cocktail hour took place. Luckily, it didn’t rain during cocktail hour!  My favorite part of cocktail hour (and most of the guests) was the lemon martini bar. I think it was the only thing people drank for that whole hour!

After much debate, we decided to decorate the tent using draping on the ceiling and lights. It was so beautiful and elegant and made everything feel more romantic. We used all white linens with square plates (clean lines!) and for a pop color on the tables (besides the flowers), we displayed lemonheads in jars. It definitely added color to the table along with our menus which also had yellow on them. However, I tried not to put too much on the table because I didn’t want to to look busy. We also donated to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and put a note the bottom of our menu cards to let guests know. Oh! I also had square tables and I loved them. This way, I could have 8 people at a table, couldn’t squeeze in any more, and again, clean lines (haha). Lastly, I spray painted a white birdcage (it was a real one), which I bought and asked the florist to put flowers on it – this was my card holder. It was huge! Stand up!

Biggest Challenge

I think was really the whole church thing was my biggest challenge. Not being able to get married in your childhood church was hard for me, and we didn’t make the decision until last minute! Also, our original guest list was about 320 people. So while I didn’t have control over it, we wanted to get it down! We ended up having 230 people.

The absolute best part of my wedding was the band. They were amazing. Everyone was literally up dancing at the start of the salads until the very end. There was a noise ordinance where we were, so they had to stop playing at 10pm. Well, people wanted to keep dancing, and a “One More Song” chant came about ha ha. It was just so fun. They played upbeat, fun dance songs the whole time and were just amazing. And of COURSE marrying my best friend! He luckily is very easy going so he didn’t have too much opposition to the things I picked ha ha. I am one of 25 cousins and the first to get  married, so everybody was in a great mood and was just so excited and happy. It was truly one of the best days ever.

Modern Ontario Purple Banquet Hall Wedding by C’est Chic Photography

Here is another pretty wedding from Ontario Canada which proves purple is still a popular colour of choice when it comes to modern brides. Captured by C’est Chic! Photography and designed by The Creative Bride it’s smoothly blends an outdoor garden ceremony with an elegant indoor wedding banquet. I love the bride’s ruffled gown, the stylish pops of purple and the soft white drapings framing the banquet hall which are no less than stunning. The drapes give the whole indoor reception the magical look of an outdoor marquee with the convenience of staying indoors. The perfect choice for a sizzling hot Summer’s day or when the weather is unpredictable.Modern Bride with Purple ShoesPurple WeddingFlowergirl Dressing the BrideModern WeddingModern Outdoor Wedding CeremonyBlonde Bride Behind Her VeilOntario Modern Outdoor WeddingPurple White Wedding CandyPurple Modern WeddingRustic Wedding Bride Groom Railway LinesOntario WeddingPurple Wedding Cake with White FlowersPurple White Wedding ReceptionPurple Wedding Fantasy Photo BoothBride Purple ShoesModern Ontario Wedding

Elegant Summer Virginia Wedding by Jan Michele Photography

Get ready for a breath of fresh air and an abundance of pretty today here on Love Wed Bliss, because we’re taking you down south to Alexandria Virginia for an elegant Summer soiree surrounded by history. This gorgeous Summer wedding by Jan Michele Photography takes place on what was formerly George Washington’s property (yes THAT George!) and today is home to the American Horticultural Society. Framed by picturesque grounds and gardens it is overflowing with the charm of a beautiful bygone era. Making it a truly fitting landscape for this captivating Virginia Wedding.Real Weddings VirginiaDue to the hot Summer temperature, most of the ceremony was held under the property’s Osage Orange tree – the largest of it’s type in Virginia and believed to be a gift from Thomas Jefferson – so this beautiful wedding was already off to a impressive start. Add to that a pretty soft green and mauve color scheme, a stunning bride and an awesome outdoor marquee reception, and this Southern stunner ticks all the big boxes.  And when I tell you I’d be happy to pack my bags and live in that charming historic home, you better believe it . . . I would gladly move there in a heartbeat.  Sigh.  Oh yes, it’s settled. This sweet, Summer soiree is calling my name and I’m a gonner for sure.Alexandria Virginia WeddingSummer Virginia WeddingSummer Wedding Outdoor Decor GreenOutdoor Summer Wedding BirdcagesOutdoor Virginia Real WeddingsPurple Green Wedding InvitationsPurple Green Wedding ColorsVirginia WeddingSummer WeddingReal Weddings Outdoors GardenHistoric Building Virginia WeddingReal Southern WeddingsSummer Wedding MarqueeOutdoor Summer Wedding Seating CardsSummer Wedding Purple GreenOutdoor Real WeddingsMarquee Summer Wedding CenterpiecesOutdoor Summer WeddingOutdoor Virginia WeddingSummer Marquee Wedding

10 Chic Ideas For A Summer Wedding Theme

Summer is the ideal time for outdoor fun and excitement. It is also the ideal wedding season to make a vibrant statement with bold colors and unique styling. Add some effervescence to your Summer Wedding with these chic summer wedding ideas.

Summer Wedding Colour Palette{source}

1. Summer Invites

Kick off your wedding theme with save-the-dates and invitations reflecting a summery mood. Bright pops of color matching a vibrant summer palette will look great. Or, for a subtler look choose designs reflecting the season – butterflies, pretty florals and botanical designs all beautifully represent an outdoor summery affair.

2. Celebrate Outdoors

Summer is the perfect time for an outdoor ceremony and reception. Take advantage of venues situated on or near the water. Riverside receptions, beach weddings and locations with a view all have instant atmosphere. Alternatively the grounds of an elegant home can be transformed into a stunning venue. A majestic marquee or grouped outdoor tables on lush lawns make a lovely garden wedding setting. Or to really embrace summer, host a wedding luncheon or summer evening affair poolside, complete with floating candles, sun umbrellas and modern decor.

3. Outdoor Decorations

Outdoor Summer weddings give you plenty of scope to be creative when decorating your venue. Visualise twinkling fairy lights at a garden wedding, glowing lanterns enhancing an ocean view, or colourful rows of paper pom poms hanging from trees overhead. All of these types of decorations will give your wedding a lovely summery whimsical feel.

4. Pops of Colour

Introducing bright colors into a wedding colour palette will enhance a summer theme. Inject a burst of colour with bright coloured bridesmaid dresses or pretty bridal accessories. A bright coloured clutch or striking pair of heels instantly adds ‘wow’ factor and an element of excitement to your wedding style statement.

5. Fan Wedding Favors

Stylish hand fans are a great idea to use as wedding favors at an outdoor wedding. Not only do they look stylish but they’ll also keep your guests cool and comfortable in the summer heat.

6. Pretty Parasols

Parasols at a wedding always look charming. They can be a great way of injecting a burst of colour or making a style statement for your summer theme. Use them as an alternative to your bridesmaid bouquets – not only will look fantastic, but the girls will be grateful for the shading too. Summer parasols also make for a chic guest favor particularly at a beach wedding or garden party. Group them together in an attractive basket with a note to your guests, and they will add a lovely personalized touch to your stylish decor.

7. Summer Cocktail Bar

A self-serve cocktail bar with a colorful display of bottles and garnishes gives a summer reception a stunning focal point and crowd pleasing element. Think lots of fresh fruit, cocktails sweetened with simple syrups and refreshing flavours. Mimosa’s, Bellini’s or Daiquiris are all popular choices and all look fabulously chic in pretty cocktail glasses.

8. Ice-cream Cones

Nothings says Summer more than ‘ice-cream.’ I can think of no better option on a hot summers afternoon, than to indulge in a chilled creamy cone or fruity gelato. Serving ice-cream cones at a wedding is fast becoming a popular trend which is a winner with wedding guests. For elegant modern soiree arrange for waiters to serve your guests individual cones. Or, if you’re having a relaxed outdoor bash, hire a retro ice-cream van – it’s bound to be an instant hit.

Summer Wedding Themes{ice-cream cones / ice-cream van}

9.  Fan Programs

Another way to include paper fans in your summer wedding is to have them double up as ceremony and wedding programs. All you do is have your guests pick up their individual fans as they arrive at the ceremony and they will stay cool and informed of the days events at the same time.

10. Summer Dessert Buffet

A wonderful ending to a summer dining experience is the dessert buffet.  Laden with mouth watering desserts such as fruit and berry tarts, colourful cupcakes and sweet treats it’s a delectable delight for the eyes and the appetite.  Many weddings are adopting the dessert buffet in lieu of the traditional wedding cake or as an addition on the menu to add extra appeal to their reception. Whether featured in an inside venue or displayed outdoors, it is a Summer sweet feast for sure.
