How to Plan a Rustic Wedding

There is nothing more romantic than a rustic wedding. The crunch of the leaves, a cool nip in the air, and beautiful bursts of orange, red, and yellow can’t help but make you smile. What a perfect time to share your love and begin your life with your partner! Here is how you can plan an ultimate rustic wedding that you and your guests will totally “fall” for!

Rustic Wedding Ideas

Consider hosting your event in a rustic location like a barn. You can make this setting totally shabby chic, string lights from antiquated beams, and excite your guests’ senses with the smell of hay bales in the loft.

Rustic Wedding Dresses

A lace lined dress will work with a rustic themed wedding and enhances a number of figures. Consider trying on an ivory or cream lace cap sleeved gown that is long, flowing, and fitted to look gorgeous on your big day, fit in with your theme, and look no fuss but fabulous. For some added charm, you may also wish to drape a delicate lace shawl around your décolletage as the evening air takes over.

Rustic Bridesmaid Dresses

Have your favorite ladies wear something short and sweet. Look for ruffle detailing, textured embellishments like a knotted or braided halter top, lace, and opt for cowboy boots to add some country charm.

Rustic Wedding Colors

It is essential that you select a color palette that complements your rustic venue décor and ceremony setting. Keep your color palette neutral to adhere to a rustic theme and avoid anything that looks too bold or bright. Hues and variations of champagne, mauve, rust, pine, and taupe tones are perfect and allow nature around you to really be the star of the show.

Rustic Wedding Decorations

The wonderful thing about a rustic wedding is that you can really include hearty, earthy, and natural elements into you big day. Pumpkins, tea lights hanging from fences, an antique cart filled with fall fruit, and even lanterns filled with seasonal flowers and pine cones are perfect ways to play up your theme and are ultra-affordable!

Rustic Wedding Invitations

Your wedding invitations set the tone for your rustic event. Consider selecting an invitation that has a wooden background and is simple but chic. It will be clear to your guests your themed intent.

Rusting Wedding Cakes

Consider serving up your cake on a hearty slab of a tree trunk! You can keep your frosting neutral and add whimsical embellishments like a birch heart façade with your initials carved as the focal point of the dessert and add cascading woodland flowers and leaves around the sides and base.

 Rustic Wedding Bouquets

Nothing says rustic like a bouquet filled with seasonal wild flowers and fiddlehead. You may also consider succulents wrapped in twine, or strands of lavender adhered with burlap and a vintage sparkly pin.

Planning a themed wedding is fun and easy to do. Work in some of these suggestions and tips into your special day in order to create a memorable, rustic celebration.

Tuscan Themed Winery Wedding by Natalie Hilliard Photography

It’s not often you get to escape to Tuscany on a Tuesday, but these lovely winery nuptials from Natalie Hilliard Photography is allowing us to do just that. Filled with beautiful rich tones, stunning florals and rustic Italian details, this tuscan themed wedding, held in an elegant tent, has us beaming from ear to ear and humming Ti Amo over and over to ourselves!

Lovely bride Natalie shares with us the details:

1. What was the vision for your Tuscan themed wedding?

I envisioned a Tuscan villa with many simple, natural elements. And eggplant purple, celadon green, wood & iron for our color palette.

2. What was the size & budget of your wedding?

We ended up spending approximately $14,000.00.

3. Your florals were stunning! What flowers and decorations did you choose for your theme?

  • Ceremony Island Arrangements ~ Salmon Gladiolas, Purple Stock, Green Hypericum, Yellow, Solidago, Green Bells of Ireland, Terra Cotta Rose, Hanging Eucalyptus, Italian Ruscus, Sword Fern.
  • Rusty Iron Spheres ceremony aisle arrangements ~ Mini sunflowers, Purple Stock, Purple Sage, Rosemary, Green Hypericum, Terra Cotta Roses.
  •  Wooden Bowl Reception Centerpieces: Herb Foliage, Purple Lisianthus, Mini Sunflowers, Terra Cotta Roses, Green Hypericum, Physicocarpus.
  • We used antique wooden wine crates from Vintage Ambiance  to use for the dessert buffet tiering. Rustic farm tables (from seattle Farm Tables) were used for the head table, and dinner buffet tables (from Vintage Ambiance) for the guest tables. We also had wine barrels with glass tops for occasional cocktail tables.

4. What do you think made your wedding unique?

The venue itself is very unique! The ceremony site is situated around a pond with an island in the middle of it. The guest sits on one side of the pond and the wedding party stands on the island. Its absolutely beautiful and unlikely anything I have seen before! We did multiple different mini desserts rather than having a wedding cake and we also made all of the beer. We loved it and so did everyone else! Also we decided to hire Chopstix Roadshow for our reception entertainment which is a dueling piano show. The entire show is a live request show so the guests are able to choose what they want to hear. The most fun thing of the night was the photo booth with props that our photographer integrated into our reception. We got some absolutely hilarious and memorable pictures!!

5. Rather than a traditional wedding cake you chose mini desserts. Tell us about those?

We chose a 4 inch mini White-Chocolate raspberry cheesecake as the cutting cake. For guests we had a selection of desserts including mini Quadruple Chocolate and mini Lemon White Chocolate cheesecakes, mini Key Lime blackberry pies and mini classic Apple Pies, mini classic Vanilla and mini Spumoni cupcakes, Hazelnut gelato or Rice gelato.

5. Tell us about your Tuscan themed wedding favors?

We used mini terracotta pots filled with herb starts (ie; basil, tarragon, parsley).

6. Describe your Bridal style?

My dress was from Laineemeg Bridal (formerly From the Gown Up) – an off-white Satin fit and flair, with some lace and rhinestone detailing. My shoes were M by Marinelli with Sparkle silver with rhinestone detailing. I wore a birdcage veil with floral and rhinestone embellishments and carried a bridal bouquet filled with Cream Roses, Orange Dahlias, Cream Hypericum, Orange Calla Lily and Green Hanging Amaranthus.

7. The bridal party look very smart. Tell us about their style.

The bridesmaid dresses were from David’s Bridal Satin Dresses in Lapis. The wore Jessica Simpson Black Patent Pumps and their bouquets were filled with Purple callas, Orange Callas, and ornamental grasses. Tyler’s (groom) boutonniere featured a Sword Fern & Mini Purple Calla Lily and his groomsmen wore herb foliage. They wore Banks Charcoal Grey striped suits with white dress shirts from Jos. Tyler wore a white tie, whilst his groomsmen had patterned Lapis ties to match the bridesmaids.

8. Did you include any DIY or personalized details?

I created the monogrammed stickers we used on the candy bags used for our candy buffet. The wooden bowls used for the reception centerpiece were bought from a thrift store, sanded down, and re-stained. I created all of the table name cards (different grape varietal names) and escort cards display. I also designed the save the dates which were laser cut into cork, as well as all of our boxed invitations.

9. What did you find most challenging?

The most challenging part of our wedding planning was working with a caterer who was too busy to deal with me or my questions in a timely manner. I struggled through it and was able to get everything wrapped up, but it was by far my biggest cause of stress. I’m very detailed oriented so I completely enjoyed the planning of everything else right down to picking the different Italian flavor themed cupcakes and other desserts.

10. What were your favourite moments?

Getting ready was very fun… it’s not every day you get to be so pampered! Also, walking down the aisle and looking into the face of my soon-to-be husband is an unforgettable moment. The fact that we were able to share it with so many of our close friends and family made it that much more special!

11. Your advice to Bride’s & Groom’s planning now?

Seek out multiple reviews on your vendors (particularly from outside their website or their given references). Also, I went into planning with the idea that if I hadn’t received some sort of response after a week of contacting a vendor for the first time, I would cross them off my potential list because communication obviously is not very important to them. I broke this rule with my caterer and ended up seriously regretting it!

From the photographer:  From the red shoes, to the red lips, 3/4 length dress with white gloves, to the rustic charm of the table and place settings, this styled shoot, held at the Oaks Vineyard in Clovis, California, was everything we hoped it would be. Amy Jaye of Posh and Posy Events designed the look of the shoot, with red and pink florals mixed with succulents, rose glass candle holders, and brass candleabras. The table settings featured mixed vintage glassware with burlap table runners and a rustic wood table made by the owners of 3 oaks vineyard themselves! Our models were a real life married couple, who’s chemistry was unmistakable.

Boho Chic Wedding Ideas

We fell in love with every bit of this boho chic inspiration shoot by Petula Pea Photography the instant we saw it.  The subtle and soft pretty pastel palette, the breezy outdoor setting and the eclectic mix of vintage mismatched decor are absolutely dreamy. The decadent petal style wedding cake, the country rustic touches and the beautiful boho headpieces really make a boho chic theme simply irresistible. But the stand-out detail for me, is the gorgeous bohemian style gown by D’Marie Couture – simply stunning! There are so many fab ideas in this shoot to take in, your wedding inspiration meter will be in hippie-pretty overdrive once you reach the end!

From the Event Co-ordinator: A boho chic bride is inspired by nature, loves spending time outdoors, enjoys the simple things in life, and has a free spirit admired by others. The boho chic bride steers away from the traditional style of wedding dress. Instead, she opts for a flowing, lightweight gown with a great neckline (like the halter style featured with a single fabric rose replacing flashy embellishments).

A beautiful headpiece is a must for the bohemian bride. You can add touch of sparkle to a floral headband for a modern twist; or for a more classic boho look, wearing a long flowery headpiece is perfect. {Just like the floral headpiece featured in this shoot. An original by Whichgoose, worn by photographer Patty, on her own wedding day in 2009}.

Rustic, vintage furniture pairs beautifully with boho chic style. The hand-built doorway is an original ceremony backdrop and signifies an opening to a new adventure. The weathered nightstand is a great contrast against the delicate rose petal cake, and the drawers and shelves filled with trinkets represent family heirlooms.

Mismatched chairs are a fun way to mix-up the guest tables and using vintage picture frames to display table numbers gives the tables a creative touch. We added layers of textures and colors to the table for dimension, along with patterned plates and mismatched glasses to compliment the outdoor canvas. Lastly, low floral arrangements of various heights were added to create a soft, romantic look without overdoing it.

Tamworth Scottish Themed Wedding by Wanted Imagery

If you are all about classic style and rustic charm then you’ll fall head-over-heels with this beautiful wedding. Set in the gorgeous grounds of The Pavillion in Tamworth and featuring a Scottish theme (a nod to the groom’s heritage) it’s a delightful garden wedding brimming with joy. We are talking white blooms with pretty succulents, rich purple bridesmaid dresses with statement pearl necklaces, plaid kilts and countryside greenery for days. Not to mention the gorgeous bride and her handsome groom, who are so darn cute! All the romance and fun is photographed by the wonderful Wanted Imagery who now has me dreaming of Edinburgh Castle, the Isle of Skye, and hagis…(ok, maybe not hagis – ew!). Enjoy.

From the photographer: This wedding was a dream to photograph. A stunning bride, good looking groom, amazing bridal party, and a day full of emotions, excitement and just good fun. Not to mention all the behind the scenes details which brought this amazing day to life. Chris’s family who have Scottish heritage (hence the kilts!) live in New Zealand. Whilst Amber’s family live on property near Quirindi and Chris and Amber live in Newcastle – hence the reason for getting married in Tamworth.  Chris’ three brothers were his groomsmen, whilst Amber had her sister, sister in law, and close friend/new cousin! (I love close bridal parties). At the ceremony, Amber walked down the aisle to bagpipes playing and at the reception, the groomsmen, Chris’s Dad and friends, surprised everyone (especially Chris and Amber!) with an amazing rendition of the Haka. So loud….so awesome! Chris also surprised Amber and sang her a song…. and he was good! All the decor was DIY and made by Amber, her mum and sister. Their decorations made the already beautiful Pavillion in Tamworth, just that little extra special (all that Pinterest time does pay off!)

Romantic Country Wedding Ideas

Up next is an inspiration shoot captured by Alea Lovely Fine Art Photographer which takes your typical rustic country wedding theme, infuses it with a whole-lot-of romantic style and classical old world elegance. With sherbet hued florals by the Victorian Gardens, a stylish invitation suite by Announce This, a gorgeous array of pastel ombre cakes by Classic Cakes and a beautiful gown by Ivy & Aster with a beaded cape we are sighing over, this shoot is not only bursting with fabulous ideas but writes a whole new chapter on vintage country chic and we’re LOVING it to bits!

From photographer Alea: A little bit of country, a little bit of elegance. I am from the Midwest and wanted to show a new way to do a Midwestern affair. We got away from the rustic look and found a more romantic way to fit this wedding. With bright colors and eye catching details, my team and I put together a styled shoot that a bride from any region could get on board with.

I loved the cake table. The three cakes with ombre details and soft pastels was a new spin on the traditional one cake. Stunning florals accented the unfinished wooden top table and the “bride and groom” mannequins brought a very unique accent to the table. The dress by Ivy and Aster was a great complement to the shoot. I was going for something elegant that could also be very casual. With laser cut layers and a gorgeously detailed beaded cape, it was a super light and airy gown and also perfectly falls in line with the bridal fashion trending right now. I had her hair done with lighter extensions to accentuate the ombre in her hair. Our hair stylist created gorgeous curls that looked effortless in the wind, and we gave her a rusted golden hair piece to pin back her hair, a nice accessory that wasn’t too overbearing. She wore flat gold tin earrings that complemented her hair, and bronzy makeup.

The ceremony area was in an open field with the center stage being wooden poles, much like you see on a country home, and decorated with florals and hay like accents. I chose mismatched chairs as a fun way to play up an intimate ceremony. The reception table was a worn blue table and we used purple napkins to contrast the colors of the florals. Old silverware was placed next to the gold-lined plates for a subtle juxtaposition of classic and antique. There were great food details like the mini open fruit pies, pecan desserts, and a peach signature drink with actual sliced peaches in it. The invites were watercolor with a modern approach to the RSVP card.

Birds Nest Themed Wedding Inspiration

Wow!…this next inspiration shoot is just Exquisite with a capital E, as far as I’m concerned. The ever so talented Vanessa from Vanessa Voth Photography is not only the master behind the lens responsible for all of this rustic spring loveliness, but she’s also the brains behind the concept. Inspired by a simple twig plate charger, she took the whole birds nest themed wedding idea to another level, using subtle yet gorgeous detailing of twigs, feathers and birdcages in a shoot which which is styled to perfection. Just like birds of feather that flock together, this talented bunch of vendors were all meant to collaborate and bring us this stunning photo gallery.

Photographer Vanessa shares her inspiration: I started dreaming of and planning this shoot months ago. It was always a dream of mine to plan, organize and photograph a styled wedding shoot that fully encompassed everything I love about weddings. Being a creative person myself, I wanted to bring a lot of DIY aspects into the shoot and unique details. My inspiration for the shoot was a twig plate charger I found – and from there the theme of bird’s nest/twigs/feathers came into existence! I ended up with an amazing team of talented vendors and the whole day and shoot could not have turned out any better! Definitely a dream come true!
