Breathtaking DIY Barn Wedding by Rachel Rowland Photography

Every beautiful detail in this breathtaking barn wedding is DIY. Carefully crafted by friends and family, it proves that rustic chic is absolutely achievable all on your own. There are lovingly special touches everywhere you turn including table numbers made from a tree fallen in the bride’s sister and brother & law’s yard and homemade chalkboards created from re-purposed kitchen cabinets. Wine bottles used as centerpieces (gladly donated by many friends) and mason jar wine glasses made by the bride’s Aunt. The DIY went even further than just decorations with hair and make-up styled by the Step-Mother of the Groom, the ceremony officiated by the Bride’s Uncle, and the wedding party and bride walking down the aisle to music performed by brides sister and brother-in-law. Although there was no wedding planner, you would never know, as all their family and friends worked hard setting up the venue and creating the centerpieces the night before, ensuring every detail was perfect. And as you’ll see from the gorgeous pics by Rachel Rowland Photography it was a true success!

Wedding Highlights

Angel and Ryan wanted to have a sophisticated and comfortable wedding with a great party. She loves to dance, he loves great food and beer and together they love entertaining family and friends. Coming from Nevada, these two wanted to create a great getaway for their guests and ultimately decided to bring everyone along with them to Wine Country. Keeping with their theme of sophisticated comfort, Angel and Ryan found a sweet private residence called the Oak Leaf Retreat in Healdsburg, CA to tie the knot. Many of the wedding day elements held some sort of significance to the couple and many of the details were created by either them or family members.

The DIY elements of the day:

Tables – wine bottle hurricane cut by groom, wood planks for the runner, interspaced bud vases (put together by the bride’s stepsisters) and simple but elegant candles and succulents. Necklace – made by bride’s mom featuring grandma’s brooch (who was at the wedding); Table names – Beers with couple related theme (groom and bride love craft beers); Escort Cards – created by the Bride’s stepsister are embossed coasters tagged with names to take home if desired. All paper goods/programs/invites – created by a friend of the groom. DIY photo booth. Drink Stirrer Flags with song quotes for signature cocktail (a Pimm’s cup, the bride love’s music); Triangle dinner bell – from the bride’s step mom (we had one growing up) for getting guests attention for speeches or kisses. Several wooden signs for direction. Lighting – by the Bride’s Dad.

 From the photographer:

I had the time of my life photographing these two. I’ve known them since college… actually I didn’t really know them individually, only as a couple. Which is why it was kind of surreal being their wedding photographer. It meant that we were all really grown ups now and at least 2 years out of college. And they chose me to be the one to capture the most special day of their life.

We weren’t in our college bubble anymore, this was real life and they were finally getting married! Their friends and family have been waiting for this for a long time. And the day finally came and it was a very big celebration!

Lots of tears, lots of smiles, and enough cake and beer to keep everyone satisfied. Even though I truly loved every moment of the day, I think I had the most fun photographing the dancing.

Mitch and Mallory were so relaxed and happy and ALL their friends really know how to do a dance party. They would have danced all night if the venue didn’t cut them off at 10. Everyone loved celebrating on this joyful day!

Backyard Garden Oasis

DIY Garden Wedding in North Carolina

It doesn’t get any more tranquil or pretty than this garden wedding by Jen Yuson Photography. The entire celebration takes place in the backyard of groom Ben’s childhood home, and as you’ll see, the whole setting resembles a garden oasis with lush foliage and shady tree canopies framing the celebrations. Stunning bride Becca (who looks amazing in her stylish understated gown) is escorted down the aisle by her two beautiful children, and then her father reads the sermon to seal the special deal. Oh, and did I mention Becca used to be a wedding planner? So, naturally every lovely detail is perfectly polished and ever-oh-so-pretty. There’s also plenty of delightful rustic DIY touches to be found including the wooden ceremony canopy decorated with peach blooms, the red radio flyer wagons stacked with refreshments, and the candy bar display with it’s cute monogrammed gift bags and chalkboard notes. Yes, outdoor lovers it’s a gorgeous garden affair overflowing with charm, sentimentality and plenty of personalized touches – just what we love!

Sweet & Simple DIY Garden Wedding

California DIY Garden WeddingSome of the sweetest soirees that come across my desk are the simple DIY weddings that are so lovingly hand-crafted by the Bride and Groom. It’s always a big score in my books and this California backyard wedding captured by Alyssa Marie Photography gets top marks. From the bright and cheery garden theme to the traditional Russian wedding cake (a nod to the bride’s heritage), right through to the fabulous ‘getaway bicycles‘, this wedding proves that sometimes the best things in life come in small packages!

From the photographer: It was a beautiful intimate backyard wedding shared with close friends & relatives. All the details of this wedding were absolutely gorgeous and easy things to make on your own! Tracy Williams & Laurie Stacey from COLORSAW design helped the overall garden theme come to life. Yana (bride) is Russian and had her family from Russia was watching the entire evening over skype while most of Bryan (groom) had his family flown in from Japan. They had so many cute ideas that made their evening really special like a symbolic balloon release & their personalized “get-away” bikes for their honeymoon. Their cake was a simple homemade traditional Russian layered honey cake.

DIY Colorado Wedding by Heather Gray Photography

The very best weddings aren’t always the weddings filled with glitz and sophistication (although we love those too). They’re the simple, honest, joy-filled weddings that remind you how wonderful it is to be in love. A wedding where the whole atmosphere is electric with fun and the smile on the bride’s face illuminates the whole day. Well, this is one of THOSE weddings. A sweet DIY backyard-style affair on a private estate in Colorado, where not only can you feel the love, but you can feel the absolute joy! Thanks to Heather Gray Photography we have all the happy pics to prove it.

From the photographer: Lyndia and Leo were married August 20 at a private estate in Telluride, Colorado. It was beautiful, intimate and completely perfect. Lyndia grew up running around on the property and through the trees lining it with her best friends who lived there, it was like a second home for her so it made sense that she would want her wedding there.

The morning of the wedding it began to sprinkle a bit, I won’t lie, I was worried. I arrived at the location and there were clouds billowing along the canyon. As the ceremony was about to begin it started to pour. Her planner and good friend asked her what they should do and Lyndia said with a smile on her face, “then we’ll get wet.” Through sprinkles and rain drops the wedding went on. The guests used their umbrellas and I did my best to keep my camera out of the rain.

Lyndia and Leo were all smiles, I don’t think they even noticed the weather, they just stared into each other’s eyes. As they began their vows the rain cleared a bit as if planned. They wrote their own vows which I am a huge fan of if you feel comfortable doing that. It was sweet, tender and beautifully honest. You could feel their connection a mile away and as they kissed for the first time as bride and groom the sun came out from behind the clouds. It was like a movie.

The reception was amazing. The brides father brought fresh Alaskan salmon that he caught with his friends in his home state. All of the food was prepared with love by the bride and groom’s family. For dinner we sat at long family styled tables under a white tent lined with tissue paper flowers, candles and wild flower center pieces. The cutlery and plates were a mix of vintage and new from friends and family, it was darling. We drank sangria and ale from mason jars. The whole reception felt like you were at someone’s home for dinner. Other favorite moments were the bride and groom jumping on a trampoline and Leo pushing Lyndia on the tire-swing.

Creative DIY Wedding by Chelsea Nicole Photography

If this wedding had another title, it would have to be…’Coca Cola Bottles and Vintage Sweethearts.’ Or then maybe…‘How to design a Budget Wedding and make it look Totally Adorable‘ would also suit it to a T. Clearly, either one would beautifully sum up this, offbeat, fun and incredibly creative backyard brunch. And with so many pretty pics by Chelsea Nicole Photography, it’s a vintage-inspired affair that will make you wish eclectic was a ‘must-have’ wedding style.

DIY Creative WeddingHandmade Vintage Wedding DressNorth Carolina DIY WeddingCreative Vintage DIY Centerpieces

The bride’s dress was a handmade vintage dress (from Etsy) which she teamed with a pair of shoes her mom bought two years previously. They were perfect for her vintage retro look.

She wanted her bridesmaids to be completely themselves and ‘comfortable,’ so they each chose a dress from their wardrobe the day before! The flowers for the mismatched bridesmaid’s bouquets were all individually chosen to reflect each girl’s personality.

All elements of the wedding were contributed by family and friends, with the bride delegating a specific task to each person she knew they would enjoy. For instance, those who loved to cook brought the food. Her roommate arranged flowers and a bridesmaid arranged the bouquets. This offbeat bride also wanted to look around on the day and see things which were familiar to her. All the decorations used to decorate the backyard came from the bride’s house. Each jar used in the table centerpieces had a story attached to them and the flowers used were from a neighbors yard. Even the oak tables were fashioned by the old man across the street. Everyone played a part ….everyone was connected.

Naturally, the traditional wedding cake was given the flick. Instead, the bride and her friends visited Dunkin Donuts the day before and voila! …this wonderful interpretation of a breakfast croqombouche was created out of donuts. What an awesome idea!

Donut Wedding Cake IdeasCoca Cola Cans on Wedding CarDIY Wedding North Carolina

From the photographer: This North Carolina DIY brunch wedding stands out amongst most for its creative edge. The Coca Cola bottles, vintage vases, ornately covered books, croquet to entertain quests, doughnut tower and wild flowers, created a rustic, yet vintage venue that mirrored the bride and groom’s free spirit and artistic style. Cobwebs and giant bumbles bees only added to the decor. Being not the typical bride, the guest book was tossed and replaced with a corner table where “love” notes could be written and placed in an ornate box. Bridesmaids each wore there own dress of choice as did the groomsmen and flower girls. An assortment of wildflowers were chosen for bouquets each reflecting the style of that particular bridesmaid who carried it. After skipping down the aisle to meet her groom, the guests chuckled, vows were exchanged, and everyone could see the true, sincere love these two shared. I was honored to be apart of such an important moment in this couple’s journey together.

DIY Wedding Breakfast by Benjamin David Photography

You know what I love the most about this DIY wedding by Benjamin David Photography . . . the sheer JOY that is jumping out of every image. Well, admittedly that’s not the only thing that I love. I love how it’s a wedding breakfast held at 8am in the morning when everything is fresh and the air is crisp. I also love the sweet handmade touches such as the simple burlap and lace wrapped mason jars filled with pretty baby’s breath, the DIY vintage styling and the yummy looking breakfast buffet for their guests. But what I think is really awesome is the couple’s message on a chalkboard sign asking their guests ‘to choose a seat, not a side’ – what a wonderful sentiment. It’s just one of those weddings which makes you smile and feel the love!
